Health & Fitness 10 year old girl dies after eating cake ordered online for her Birthday

You can get food poisoning from anything. Expired milk, chicken, etc. Unless we know what all the family ate the whole day we are just speculating.

Example - I got food poisoning from eating fried mixture from a bakery. First time i ate very little, i felt something queasy in my stomach. Then at tea time when I ate on empty stomach, I felt the full effect. Started vomiting at night and had loose motions every hour or so. I probably vomited 4-5 times till my stomach did not have anything left in it and was just vomiting air out. Out of half kilo i had bought, i had barely eaten 50gms of it. Even my intestines had become empty completely due to loose motions. . Took me ~4 days to recover completely from that mess. Another time I had food poisoning at office where 6-8 guys who ordered fried rice and chicken curry from a restaurant had to go to the loo all at once. People were complaining because there was only one loo and it was always busy.

Sweets!

I got a severe case of food poisoning from eating a sponge rasgulla. I was in hospital on an IV drip within 24 hours. It's been 2 decades since that incident, but the sight of rasgulla makes me puke even today.

Wasn't admitted but man I was puking all day after a trip to KFC. Now, even the thought of fried chicken makes me nauseated.

Reminds of a case where few people died after eating vada-paav from roadside vendor in Mumbai.
Vendor cooked potatoes in a metal container which was originally used to store agricultural chemical (pesticide, etc.).

As for me, happened many years back after eating mutton biriyani from a non-descript shop inside Kalbadevi area.
>15 times to washroom, intermittent vomiting, stomach pain, couldn't stand up by myself. Friends carried me to auto, then helped the steps on hospital, Dr. found I had acute food infection, kept on drips, pain killers, heavy antibiotics, sleep medicine, injections, whatnot. I still get a kind of pain in lower bottom left side of abdomen.

Her symptoms are not from food poisoning but some other kind of poisoning

“How is it possible that only one child died after eating the cake? After all, many other people also had it. I am told some had vomiting. But it cannot be that the spoiled cake only killed one and the rest did not even need hospitalisation,” the minister said, adding that “rest, it is a matter of investigation. Both the food safety and forensic reports would be collated to reach a conclusion. But there are many questions. They need to be answered. We will know whether it was the cake or something else.”

I don't know what else in the cakes ingredients can take out a family this quickly.
It would be very unlikely for eggs to be the cause.
The article doesn't conclude it was the cake. It's just suspected.

High Levels Of Artificial Sweetener Found Inside Cake Linked To Punjab Girl's Death

Officials said action will be taken against the bakery soon and a fine may be imposed. A FIR has already been filed against the bakery's owner.

So, did the Saccharine present in the cake cause the young girl's blood sugar level to spike so high that it killed her?
no that's not possible in any way.

all the members fell ill, the girl was probably dehydrated due to all the vomiting and diarrhoea she was having, also the hospital didnt administer her the required fluids and was directly put on ventilator .
lapses have been made on hospital side also but it has been covered.

How does a hospital fail to administer IV fluids to a patient who has severe vomiting/diarrhea? Isn't that the very first thing you would do? Isn't that something you would expect any rural clinic to be able to do? I'm just asking as a layman.

One can understand these kinds of lapses in judgment when a case is very complicated and requiring multiple specialists etc, but this sounds like gross negligence manslaughter.

@dpandey
> It doesn't affect blood sugar or insulin levels the way sugar does.

Though not directly related to sugar levels, remember reading that artificial sweeteners do interact with brain chemistry.
Because pituitary gland(?) in brain triggers some hormonal response once tongue registers sweetness. Forgot the details...
