PON SFP vs ONU

What are all the advantages and disadvantages with going either route?

a PON SFP/SFP+ in the Switch/Firewall
vs
a separate ONU connected to the Switch/Firewall

e.g. latency, ease of config, cost, ISP compatibility, etc. btw I read the SFP modules tend to get very hot?

PON SFP/SFP+ in Switch/Firewall
Advantages:

  • Simplicity: One device to manage (switch/firewall with SFP)
  • Potentially Lower Cost: Can be cheaper than buying a separate ONU
  • Space Saving: Eliminates the need for an extra device
Disadvantages:
  • Limited Availability: Not all switches/firewalls support PON SFPs
  • ISP Compatibility: May not be compatible with all ISPs who offer PON services
  • Configuration Complexity: Setting up a switch with a PON SFP can be more involved
Separate ONU

Advantages:

  • Wider Compatibility: Generally compatible with most ISP PON services
  • Simpler Configuration: Easier to set up and manage compared to a PON SFP
Disadvantages:
  • Cost: Requires purchasing and managing an extra device (ONU)
  • Complexity: Adds another device to your network setup
  • Space: Takes up additional physical space

Include the heat generated also by the SFP. They run hot, and it's a known fact. You might need to buy some extra heat sinks and a cooling fan (not required if your rack has active cooling present).
I bought the SFP because it eliminates the requirement of an extra power adapter. Besides this, every third-party ONU works fine, to be honest.
