Anecdotal evidence but I got 2, still used daily in office, the older one (HP @ 2010) is mostly used in office as excel, sister's Dell @2011, is a secondary laptop for my father to to Tally/Excel and youtube and a 2014 Dell used by Mom for work, both dells cost <50k, the 2014 one has win 10 running on it and I upped the ram to 16 and got a SATA ssd for it. Honestly, it all depends on how you use your electronics, we have decade old mobiles (and 7-8 year old androids) still running and given out to staff, a 2009 PC still running with all of its original components, a mouse/keeb bought in 1999 still in use, you get the gist right? I can even send proof if you want. Apple is not unique in this, shit just used to be built like a tank in those days.

To answer your question, check with 3rd party service folks in your city.
afaik, mba display replacement should cost between 10-15K for non OEM and (maybe ) 20 for OEM part.

10-15K seems a little low. This price would have been valid a few years ago. Today, even third-party service "folks" charge a hefty premium, especially for Apple products. Most think, if you can spend on an Apple product, we can charge high.

Yeah, that makes sense. Maybe it's the weather but whenever I try to upgrade or repaste an older laptop, the plastics just fall apart. Literally turn into crumbs. Especially the parts that hold the display hinge. Most of the people I did this for were college kids who didn't care much about what they had.
I had a beautiful Dell Vostro V13 that lasted a lot longer than I expected, so there are exceptions.
I got my iPhone X screen replaced with a genuine display (FaceID and TrueTone working) some 2 years ago. Apple was asking 25k for it. A friend referred me to iMac Zone in Delhi and the guy did it for 9-10k. I'm not sure if it is okay to share his contact number here in the post. If anyone needs, I'll DM. IMO it is worth getting a quote.
Plastics do degrade, thats the reality, nothing you can do about it specially since these days companies are really cheaping out on well... everything, thats why most laptops eventually end up as office laptops even gaming ones, Laptops by design are not made for longevity, be it a mac or a windows one. its just most peeps never keep their laptops for more than 5 years that its not as pointed out.

depends. I broke the display on a series 6 watch a few months ago. local repair shop quoted 5.5K for non OEM and 9K for OEM .
The repair guys also do know that if someone is choosing to come to them, they do not intend to pay hefty prices
They did mention that with the watch, the water resistance takes a hit after opening it up so since the watch was anyway ageing, i chose not to get it repaied.
But 3rd party repair costs are not particularly bad. Lesser number of SKUs /lower fragmentation that sell in relatively high volumes enables them to stock/carry lesser number of parts which in turn helps with better repair pricing
not the 3rd party repair guy's fault, most repairs specially on Apple devices is a straight up part replacement (look up PhoneRepairGuru on YT), and Apple being as anti-consumer as you can be, is reluctant to provide parts to 3rd party repair services, hence the premium. Louis Rossman on YT has documented a lot of stuff on this topic if you are curious about it

And yes, Apple too is at fault for reserving components, refusing any cooperation, and charging a ridiculous premium for repairs and service.

The lowest quote I got was 22k for a used display, 28k for new. He said it was OEM. And he said there won’t be Truetone because there won’t be GST invoice, no paper trail. If we do it thru apple you get full functionality but would cost north of 40k.
This is pretty much why I went for a Mac as well. I have a friend who still uses his 2012 MacBook Pro. And it’s not just that, you also pay a premium because you don’t want to get out of that goddamn ecosystem. I don’t mind the high price tag. The longevity it offers, the Apple ecosystem you’re a part of more than makes up for the price.
But I hate the hefty repair costs and these anti consumer practices. Right to repair is something everyone should have. I had a Dell Inspiron once with a broken hinge. Ordered the display hinge from Aliexpress, and then me and my friend sat down, disassembled the entire laptop, replaced the hinge and built it back up. It was really fun I still remember how much we screwed up before finally getting it right. The experience you get here’s much more valuable.
With all this sh*t Apple’s pulling and with the Snapdragon ARM chips idek if it’s worth it anymore.
Longevity is not the argument I would use for macs considering How Apple drops support for >5 year old macs and how often stuff is deprecated for older macOS versions

The only problem is that in the absence of aliex now, you would need to source the panel locally or hand carry it from elsewhere
