All OS How do you adjust to 20:9 aspect ratio?

So my past phones are Pixel 1 XL, Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 3 XL. They all had 18:9 displays, I think the 1 had 16:9. But from today I started using a Pixel 8. And right now as I type this I have a terrible migraine after using the phone for few hours. What's the problem with this crammed up elongated screens? I am unable to find a single benefit of this over the wider aspect ratios. Videos look worse (fill to zoom cuts way too much now), texts look worse and stretched to more lines vertically now! I mean wtf?

Is this something which I'll get used to, or should I just try to replace my newly bought phone? Are the 19.5:9 on them iphones notably better or what? This is a serious issue for me. Worse than any notch crap.

Maybe you are sensitive to low PWM displays?

I doubt 20:9 aspect ratio in phone is an issue, if it was a monitor, I could have agreed that its not convenient, but it is convenient for a phone IMO.

Anyways, go to a doctor, not a tech forum.

The only disadvantage is video. But text shouldn’t look elongated. You should be seeing more text lines compared to 18:9.

One advantage of higher aspect ratio is smaller width of the phone for the same screen size so it is easier to hold in the hand.

No phone manufacturer actually did that, they just made the phones longer and longer and kept the same width.

But yeah OP's problem is due to OLED PWM flicker, the aspect ratio can only be annoying at most.

Two weeks in, and it's the narrow width of the screen which is the main problem for me. Previous phone was 76 mm wide, this is 70 mm. And the default font is too tiny which creates this eye strain. I increased the font size but so many texts are cut off. And many apps simply don't follow Android's built in font settings, so they remained the exact same size even after increasing the font. For that I had to increase the display size as well. Now it's too big lol. Like a senior citizen ui. And Android 14 has this absurd amount of padding on them notifications btw! Wasting the screen estate so much on a narrow AF display.

The old phone at 76 mm was quite comfortable to hold. There's absolutely no point in stretching the phone dimension vertically. It's not easier to hold, rather weirder. Like a TV remote.

I only checked the screen size, 6.2 it showed. So I thought it would be bigger than the 6 inches of the 2XL. But in actual usage it feels like a 5.5 one. Should have got the brick 8XL.

Yes, Pixels font and size settings are not for normal people. I want even fine grained font size settings than whats there right now. My font size size is 3rd dot from the - sign and display size is 2nd dot from minus sign. I want some size in between those dots. Pixel designers are somewhat far away from reality. Probably using ai to generate software and buttons.

I think there was settings to reduce the screen size but now it seems to have disappeared. Pixel phone settings are so convoluted that even searching does not help. Last time I'm buying this phone.

Maybe the Pixel 8 Pro is what you need, since you had the Pixel 3XL before. The 8 is a compact phone (thank god) which is why it is 71 mm wide. The size of the 8 and 3XL screens vertically is the same, and the 8 is shorter than the 3XL in overall length also, so it can't be the cause of your problems.

Exactly what I am saying man. Finer control of font size is a must have. Either it's too large, or too small. No in between. I also set font the same size as yours, 3/7, but like i said, many apps, even Google's own Chrome, Gpay and then Telegram, imobile and so many other apps don't even get affected by it, remaining with their default tiny icons/fonts irrespective of how large you have set the font at. Increasing only the display size works for those apps. So i had to increase the display size to 3/5, and kept font at default 2/7. The fonts are still too small.

Today a15 was released. Absolutely no changes wrt to UI. Android 8.1 was the last mature release. And probably Android 11 as well.
