^^ it is applicable to all batteries including modern ones. I have faced issues with desire, desire hd & sgs2 regarding battery and in all the cases the above procedure helped me out greatly. Another option is to simply root and delete your battery stats, that way you can re-calibrate the battery.

^^usually the samsung guys are a bunch of numbskulls but once in a while they have some one who checks for rooting and stuff (happened to me once), so its better not to take the risk. if your device is not bricked, just reset the counter and flash stock before depositing the handset.
