Surprised to hear that modems die that easily. I've never had a modem (Used a Utstarcom from BSNL before switching to Netgear modem + router in 2011) fail at home since 2006. By the way I run them 24x7.

Get a router with ADSL modem. Reduces clutter and should not cost much compared to a stand alone router. USB ports, printer sharing, automated downloads, DLNA support are extra features you can look out for depending on your budget.

Not sure if they check the returned HDD. I RMAed a faulty 1TB WD drive back in 2011 and they never picked up the faulty drive. I still use it as a paper weight in my work desk :-)

The laptop would turn on but there would be no display (even using VGA out). It was repaired twice and the problem recurred. Guess it is a GPU issue. Suggest getting it if you need it just for the parts.
