AI workload on Synology NAS

Is there any surveillance AI workload or any other AI workload that can be run on Synology NAS, I currently have 423+, and that might not be able to sustain any significant AI workload. From what range can these machines be used for any meaningful AI, Can recent 925+ support some of the AI usecase, openClaw ?

Ot, but if u are planning on purchasing the 925+, do your research, afaik they’ve restricted all systems released post 2025, basically all nas systems that end with 25, to their own drives.. You cannot use other brand drives like wd..

They may have changed something, but I still suggest you to do your research..

They have rolled back that decision after the backlash

Ohh that’s good, but idk if I trust them personally tho, they may do something dumb again in the future

It might be better to buy a miniPC to run these softwares rather than a NAS. I run all my server softwares on a NUC and the NAS is just for storage. You don’t need to upgrade NAS’es then if you need newer hardware for running newer softwares, just like you are experiencing. Mini PCs (or any PC for that matter) are much cheaper and much more flexible in what they can run.

Although I also wanted something like you where one NAS would run everything, but I got a very good deal on a j series NAS on flipkart. j series NAS can’t run any software, but it is a very good NAS. So, I got a mini PC and it has been great for the last 2 years.

Are you referring to something like Frigate NVR?

Surveillance AI use cases require the DVA series. Any other on device AI use cases make no sense. You are better off rolling your own H/W and using Frigate.

Yes. Frigate is one of the services running on my NUC.

care to share the nuc specs

1115G4 i3 dual core processor, 12 GB RAM. I have disabled turbo boost to keep my CPU cool.

Any intel processor from 6th gen onwards will work fine for openvino which is used by frigate for hardware based detection. I would still recommend a lower power newer CPU for a 24x7 server.

You can easily run AI workloads from Frigate and Immich to your home server efficiently rather than depend on the NAS - considering that your homeserver runs 24/7 anyways - better let those cores and threads engage with the surveilance loads.
