Air Purifiers for Delhi AQI (300-400)

Counter question, why would you think the indoor air is cleaner than outside air, it’s the same air outside or inside.

Put nonwoven sheets over your windows and you won’t need them.

One month Two week old sheets:

Fresh sheets:

It works best with stuff under 40gsm, I prefer 25gsm.

Also that window opens into the back of a neighborhood, facing a giant mango tree. Not any road or factory or hotel or warehouse. Just flats and houses. And neverending construction.

If I was in Delhi, I’d probably be changing them every three days. The sheets are just Rs 10 each, and even less if you buy locally instead of Amazon.

I have an diy active filtrator and that I change out every three days. Just made it part of my routine.

It’s made a difference because I like a breeze through the house, makes me feel like I don’t live in a concrete jungle. You can see the windows are barely open.

edit: I posted about this before Best dirt free cabinet - #9 by rsaeon

Have you used a sensor to verify how it works ?

It captures a lot of dust yes, but did you check PM2.5, nasty small stuff that can easily pass through things. Also you will need to do this for every window and door. Still nice to filter it at source. Ideally we need airtight house and then a filtered intake.

Also If there is airflow, the active component inside the house wont be able to do that much. That’s what i see with my room atleast.

Since you are a pretty nifty diy guy, maybe you can buy some cheap and good PM2.5 sensor and then diy that into something you can read.

I wish I was able to buy that ikea sensor when it was discounted from 4k to 1k last year, the one with the e-ink display.

https://www.ikea.com/global/en/newsroom/innovation/ikea-launches-vindstyrka-a-smart-sensor-to-measure-indoor-air-quality-230214/

Weather apps show AQI in my area to be under 100.

But yes, I’ll buy/make a sensor to get some real numbers in the near future. I hope to have/build a solar powered weather station someday, contributing weather data for my area.

We do have the house fairly sealed up, the kitchen and dining have open windows like this and so do the bedrooms and we have a bldc exhaust fan to help with the flow of air at a remote corner in the hall, it’s silent enough and never turned off.

This was meant to help with the dust in the air caused by construction in our area (still ongoing after three years).

This is what i use, bought it for 4k. 1k price was local only, so you had to go there. Else i would have bought a spare.

Unfortunately they have stopped selling it. It has a good sensor inside. Not sure whats a good alternative.

Yeah get a sensor when you can. Without measuring its hard to say whats happening. You are full of ideas, man..

yeah great for dust, i have my doubts about smaller particles, but it will help there too atleast.

Even with everything closed, air still creeps into my room quite a bit. There is so much dust !

Windows have to be treated for this because there are small gaps. But if you do that, probably will also need a co2/co sensor.

Still closed windows + AP works very well, so enough for now for me.

we don’t need to reinvent the wheel here, there is crazy levels of pollution and airborne particulate matter in most big cities, there is already enough research to prove air purifier work by cleaning the air.

If for some reason you don’t trust the ample literature on it or news. Buy/build it yourself and test. My server is under maintenance, i’ll post my PM2.5 stats later in the day.

TL/DR: Air quality is bad most days in all big cities in northern india (more so in winters), Cant comment about other regions look up historical data on the internet. Buy an air purifier with max CADR you can afford. The bad air WILL IMPACT your health, that’s just a fact. Good Bye.

Here is the PM2.5 graph across 4 PM2.5 sensors from different rooms. Everytime you see a spike >20, it’s a door or window being opened for some reason. Big spike you see on Saturday midday is when all doors and windows had to be opened for some reason for 10 mins. 300+ PM2.5.

You are awesome

It’s wrong to assume that pollution stays outside.

It’s not rain that can fall only outside and wouldn’t enter your house.

You need to consider it as gas which enters your premises like Bhopal gas tragedy. Because, it exactly works like that. You’ll know that if you get air quality sensor. You open a window half way and within 10 seconds the sensor goes crazy in the next room.

Since the time I zeroed in on the Philips Ac1715, it has been out of stock ;-;

That is precisely why it is recommended in the manual, that for best results the AP should be run with windows closed. Though not always practical.

Is the cuckoo respure air purifier any good?

I’ve been looking at the same models. My research shows they are really reliable. They’ve been in India since 2019 and have decent to great service. The air purifier itself is pretty great.

I found this one as well but not many reviews but a person on reddit I guess said it’s a better option as well

Btw my town 120km from Pune AQI hovers between 50-100 mostly is it a worthwhile to buy the air purifier.

A link to the correct or suitable one please which you are referring to. Thanks

I use this size for those windows and change them every two weeks, it works out to be around Rs 100 per month.

It is more tedious than an air purifier but adding something like this to your routine hosue keeping chores is trivial.

This stuff is way cheaper in the local market, less than half the price.

I’ve Coway Airmega 200. Any idea from where can I get 3td party filters for this model

Any DIY ideas ?
