Another dead external HDD

Drive is still working and I can copy data. Doing that right now.

I would advise to copy all the data and then encrypt the complete drive (VeraCrypt) and then send for warranty claim. BTW what is the parameter causing it to show Caution?

Pending sector count

Uncorrectable sector count

I tested with seatools and it says the drive is okay. So, even if I send the drive for warranty, will I be able to claim warranty?

I am copying data. It’s 4.2TB in total. Moved almost 1tb yet

I’m not entirely sure, so please correct me if I’m wrong.

As far as I remember, there’s a threshold after which they replace the hard drives. They don’t typically replace the drive after just 5 reallocated sectors (arbitrary figure).

It’s 100 in my case

When I plug into windows, it shows usb not recognised, and loads after 3-4 minutes. When I try to move data from the disk, it reaches 51° too

It might be possible that drive is trying to reallocate those sectors internally from reserved pool of spare sectors but considering this is 5TB portable hdd, this process will take a long time. Better to keep your pc on 24*7 for next few days till you copy entire data & hopefully by that time this internal process too should eb completed.

Also, 51C is actually common for 4/5TB 2.5" portable hdd & that’s why I don’t recommend them unless you live somewhere with room ambient temps around 20-25C either naturally (hilly areas) or artificially (air conditioner).

Should I go for warranty claim? Will Seagate accept it?

You can try, they might accept it but before that you need to encrypt your drive to make data retrieval impossible. You seem to be using windows so just use bitlocker to encrypt the whole drive first (it effectively means writing data of same size as drive size is which is 4.5TB so will take around 2 days) & there is a chance the hdd might not even survive it & completely break down.

My main machine is Ubuntu. I don’t have crystaldiskinfo on that. I will write with 0s and then shred it

I really need this to work. Already lost so many HDDs. I will not buy external ones. Looking for internal hdds from now on and ssd

Use LUKS on linux based distros.

Yes. The gui makes it easier than /mnt/dev/crypt thing

Still waiting for someone to tell me whether the disk is eligible for RMA or not

Use full drive encryption & encrypt all the logical drives on 5TB drive.

Always try to format the drives through cmd prompt. I recovered a few failed drives of mine by it.

Seagate tos is scary

Seagate may replace your Product with a Product that was previously used, re-certified and tested to meet Seagate specifications
