I currently have an Athlon XP 2600+ rig and as you all remember, was planning on gettin an A64 rig.
Now going by the PR Ratings, its an increase of barely 200 points from the 2600+ to 2800+. Although I know the PR ratings for the XP are overstated compared to the A64, the difference would still be quite less.
My query is would I notice the difference going from my current rig to an A64 rig? Before anyone suggests get a better graphics card, i’m not too much into gaming, so my current Radeon 9600 pro serves me just fine.
I’m just looking for an increased “snappiness” in performance as such
Well i guess you wouldnt notice any real diff straight away…but your games will run better(more fps)…you’ll save time with video n stuff encoding n etc…
But as far as basic computing goes…there wont be any real change…
But the upside will be that u can upgrade to Win XP x64 in a couple of months…and u’ll notice that the A64 runs a lot coooler.
Thanks for the inputs guys The general idea i got was the Athlon64 architecture being extremely low-latency tends to bring a snappiness to the system. Had a look at Tom’s “Mother of all CPU charts” too, and there are some reasonable differences I guess, so might not be that bad an investment except for the future proof part. But then again nothing really is future proof eh? I mean say i went the socket939 way, i would need to upgrade again for PCI express etc etc.
Will give it some serious thought. Have a DFI Lanparty board on the way anyway, should be with me in less than a week, so even if the performance difference isnt significant i think i should still have plenty of fun with the DFI board! My current KT400 based board is a serious spoiler to my overclocking adventures (yeah, no PCI/AGP locks!)
Unfortunately upcoming exams and the likes may delay me from setting up the new rig by as much as a month!
