DAS Setup - Inspiration & Discussion

Hi All,

Please share all your DAS setup for inspirations.

Already have built a NAS, but looking to build a NAS as an expansion.

Same here. Looking for guidance on setting up a low-power NAS/ Homelab setups. Even more so since most of the mobo & components mentioned on google are difficult to find here - eg topton mobo and jobson cases, etc.

Have you checked this thread from @FortiCore ?

I did. Was looking at mainstream solutions using intel T processors + appropriate mobo combinations. Any suggestions of cabinets that are available in India would also be very helpful.

Latest gen T processors are difficult to get in retail, atleast i did not find.
Are you planning to build a multipurpose build, or one dedicated to NAS, plus some lightweight containers?

There are some ATX cabinates, that comes with 4+ HDD bays, or 3+ optical drive bays, which can be converted to 5 Hot swap HDD bays….. and thn regular mobo + processor could work for you

NAS will be prime focus - maybe plex as well. Nothing too demanding. Node 804 and CS380 are difficult to get a hold of and slightly expensive… esp if you factor in additional cost for mobo + cpu + ram

If you don’t mind getting a full Tower cabinet, get the Ant eSport Vanguard(7k-8k). It has 12 x 3.5” HDD bays.

CM Force 500(4k-5k) is another option.

If you want smaller option then the Fractal Node 304 is there. It costs around 10.5k.

And there are loads of 3D printed NAS cases. Makerunit YT channel had a few such cases. Though I would say for long term use, normal cabinets would work out better because of better airflow (India is hot and humid. So we have to add a lot of fans for proper ventilation)

For a DAS expansion , you need a chassis which has a backplane for connecting HDD and also a power supply switch to switch on since the DAS will not have a motherboard .

Only way to get a DAS done is to buy a Primesource cabinet . They will provide you a board to switch on the SMPS and also a back plane with an e-cable for SAS .

@yugaaa, Have you ever used their products before? The website seems so poorly designed.

Hi Already have fractal Define R6 as my NAS cabinet and dont want another full size cabinet as it is quite heavy and difficult to store.

Yes , I have used their products . They are mostly B2B suppliers . The owner has a great deal of Knowledge .

I have supplied many storage NAS , DAS boxes for VFX companies in South India . If you need any contact DM me .

Now , I am not in the IT business anymore though .
