As i have this laptop too, want to know can we over-clock this gt 540m gpu, to a safer limit..
As for laptops over-clocking is not recommended…
Want to know upto how much temp. ( under stress) can we overclock this laptop’s gpu.
Like what is the max safe limit for this gpu and laptop?
I read replies in notebookreview forum and they have got a 800/1000 to be stable ..
Itried 775/930 and temperature shot up ..
the main issue , which i see is , on using a 1080p furmark bench , it uses 11% of our 2GB memory and temperature seems to be around 77
but when i bench at 720p , where the memory usage is only 3% , the temperature rose to 88+ ..
I am tryign to find a bench tool which can combinly use GPU and 540M memory as a whole , instead of only stressing the GPU
Last time when i had dell m1530 , i overclocked it to around 10% all time and it was stable .. not to forget the M1530 had bad vents.
So with good vent like in ours , OCing shouldnt be a problem , also we have optimus , so only when you play or use GPU extensively , the dedicated 540M will kick in , other time its the INTEL HD gfx which will handle the load.
So IMO overclocking wont affect too much ..
will bench and stress and post results ..
till then if you need resources and discussion , refer this Overclocking the GT 540M
I have gt 540m graphics on my laptop, with i7 2630 processor.
I could only max Bulletstorm at playble fps :
*no AA,
*Medium post proccessing,
*high texture,
*medium shadows,
*High world details.
@ 768p resolution.
How did u play Bulletstorm at 4AA,that too with details high.
u have the same config as mine..
Is something wrong with my gpu or what?
i played it at 720P @ 4AA … 
gives a decent look IMO
rest details i didnt touch much …
But, @ 4 aa my card gave me around 5-6 fps with high settings @ 768p,
Please check it again at the above mentioned settings and reply to me as i think my card is faulty…
I could get it changed…

@aakash , try setting 540m particularly for BS in nvidia control panel
Hey, i just updated the driver to 270.XX and was able to play bulletstorm at high settings, and AA4 @ 768p…Was very much playable at around 25fps..
I think their was some problem with the dell driver for gpu..
My 3d mark 11 score went up to 1036
what is the exact driver version ? also is it a verde version ?

Oc`d the card to 730/925 from 672/900 , temp were stable
as i told u earlier.the driver version is v270.xx( dont know the exact version so entered xx after decimal)
it is certified released version from nvidia website.
i say u update yr driver. it improves the performance a lot.
mine is 270.61 only , I wanted to know whether you installed that verde version of the driver … also wanted to know if there was a new driver than .61
you can check the exact version in nvdiai control panel > Help > system information

if u want to use newer modified drivers then laptopvideo2go.com is the best site for nvidia drivers,it has both desktop and laptop drivers, so please check in the forums which on best suited for yr laptop.I used those drivers on my hp laptop.
Also, i overclocked the gpu today,i went upto 730/950 as u mentioned, no heating problems, temps were around 70-75 max.
gt 550m has 720/900 as specs, so we are faster than gt 550m it seams.

If we fry our gpu by overclocking then would dell warranty cover it or not?
Please also try to answer this that how would dell know that the gpu has been overclocked.
Ya , I used to use DOX`s modified nvidia drivers for my M1530[8600gt], but he has stopped , also I dont think ( not checked though ) they are producing or modding the latest nvidia dirvers , anyway will check it. the main issue with modded drivers are temperature. they are fast and most of the useless components are removed , but i dont know how far it will useful for OPTIMUS cards. a lots of stuff are needed and communicated between the Intels HD GFX and Nvidia GFX , as they are constantly changing the loads.
Ha ha ha… both have same cuda cores , only differ in frequncy and fill rate… yes , we are bit faster… LOL… similarly 525M can be OCd to our speed… LOL
actually its tough to fry laptop components , thats what i read in notebookreview forum jsut hours before , as they have locks and when temperature shoots up beyond certain point , the system will shutdown.
Also its wise to OC at increment of 10 for coreclock and 2-4 for memory clock speed.
that why they say , run FURmark , burn-in test for hours after each incremement , also they used to say never set it to startup value , this way when you fry ( if thats possible) , there are chances dell might find the startup OCd value. but as they say , show you poker face and say " I played crysis 2 and system shutdown and it didnt reboot again" and stick to the story..
most of the time dell will replace , but there lies another problem , the components will be a refurbished one … so performance , longitivity will be questionable.
So best practice is increase at steps of 10 , play a game for 1-2 hours with MSI afterburner or anyother app showing the temps and FPS IN-GAME, look for stable temperature , and again OC , look for temps , anything 85+ c would be a serious problem. My old 8600GT used to run at around 89-92c all times , and when temp go beyond , the system used to shutdown , has happened a lots of time for me , but never fried it. Also i will not be pushing the card too much , since if we are set our selves to play at 720p or 768p and obviously know 1080p is just not possible , I would contend myself to play at partial overclocked gfx card. In the end , we bought only a above average card .. main issue lies in the CUDA cores and DDR3 ram in nvidia card .
Got this laptop today 
. It has good build quality. I’m specially impressed with the screen..its amazing..good for watching movies. The audio quality is top-notch and it feels great to type on chiclet keyboard.

Does dell have a factory image (backup) on the HDD itself? So that one can restore whenever he wants and start afresh..

- Yes , There is a drive for that .
- I removed many Dell preinstalled softawre and MCafee was the first . You choose accoringly what you want to have .
- I removed all the crap softwares and copyied all my data and start installing the softwares like Firefox , Chorme , G talk etc.
i was thinking of installing acronis true image n get a proper backup once i uninstall all the crap n set up with all my essential programs..
Is the HDD partitioned into drives or do i have to do make logical drives myself?
the hdd is not partitioned…getting acronis image is a good idea after removing trash..you may want to install SP1 before back up.
you can defragment the disk before partitioning in order to minimize the OS partition size.
