Extremely slow PC after cpu cooler installation. Any troubleshooting help?

I tried everything but the PC became extremely slow after cooler installation and cpu is running at low wattage 5 watts and very low frequency. I tried CMOS etc . The issue is cpu was functioning before well eventhough it had high temperatures of idle(45-60 Degrees) once but maintaining temperature at load but now its almost functioning like a dead pc. Booting etc everything is happening but the pc is too slow including startup and windows application. looks like mobo set cpu is to safe for some reason right?

the only thing which changed is mx6 to mx4 thermal paste as thermal paste that was given with cooler was over. Though when i installed first it was maintaining temperatures well but wasnt ideal enough.
What do you think could be the problem?

did you remove the protective film from the cooler? may sound super simple has happened to a lot of people at least once (including me).

Hopefully the protective film from the bottom of the new cpu was removed before it was installed.

If that’s not the issue, remove the cooler and sit it back down with fresh thermal paste. Also do not over-tighten the cooler. Excessive pressure on some CPU sockets can make some systems behave weirdly. Just tighten the screws lightly until you feel resistance and stop. Dont overdo it.

Its old already seated cpu which was working well. I did reseat it multiple times expecting its my fault but its not working. I did reseat it to the level of no shaking in previous setup and it was doing perfectly fine and also was keeping temperatures below 65 degrees under load with mx6. 1 reason i removed it was because its idle load was 45 degrees which i didnt like so tried to reuse mx6 but found it was over or not enough to redo it.

Obviously removed it and it also worked once before when i applied mx6 given with cooler and even played witcher 3 no issues at 65 degrees, Maybe the temperatures were not perfect. i seated the cpu to the level where it was not moving at all and didnt try harder too.

Reason i removed it because i reseated the cpu cooler after mounting it once so thought that could be a reason for above normal ideal temperature which is 45 but it should be around 35-45

Wierdly when i used mx4 paste it tends to seperate out and not stay at the center much.Tried several times but doesnt work and cpu is going to 5w and almost 0.5 Frequency maybe MOBO nerfed it which didnt happen with mx6.

The only change is thermal paste

hard to say for me then. from the change you are describing, I dont expect it to be a change with bios, cmos or anything to do with motherboard TBH. symtoms feel like its just cooler installtion issue to mebut hard to see where exactly the issue would be. maybe post some close up pictures on cooler installed?

I have never seen thermal paste making this much of impct TBH, unless you have too little of it or too much of it I suppose (which is very hard to do in my experience).

Let’s see some pics of the paste spread if you remove the cooler.

Extremely slow ? What clock speeds is your processor hitting ?

i removed it and its completely spreading to the outside which didnt happen with mx6

its not the best spread but dont really expect this to make the pc super slow. post a pic of the cooler bottom too? I am out of ideas TBH. I’d post picture of cpu cooler bottom too, try and resinatll the cooler if still face issues, post pictures of the installed cpu cooler too. else, I would wait for someone who might have better ideas.

CPU temps ?

Clock speeds ?

Run something simple like the CPU-Z stress / bench test

Damn. Check if any of that ooze has seeped into the underside pins.

too slow to do all those things on windows as cpu was set to 5 wattage by mobo.

in bios cpu temp was showing 35 degrees and everything was normal in mobo but when i used amd adrenalin which absolutely slow to open. There i could see cpu wattage only 5w and frequency around 0.5 - usually 3.9

i feel its thermal paste issue but because mx6 which was given in the cpu cooler was working well which spread evenly too and contact was great too and also was playing witcher 3 at 60-65 degrees but i only removed it because it was not doing ideal temperatures well at 45 degrees. Was expecting 35-45 and sometimes it was going more than that and fans were aggresively spinning at 60 so i thought its better to redo the paste but it was over.(slightly there) but wasnt enough as i tried again and it was too little to work.

whereas mx4 which i got from amazon isnt doing well in terms of spread. Mx6 was spreading too thin at centre.never happened like that mx6

Paste (even if you use toothpaste temporarily) will not cause your processor to drop clocks or run at low power.

Time to check the socket and pins.

Which cooler? And why does it feel like it’s using the wrong mounting? (Do check with this once.). And also check all the 8-pin CPU and 24-pin ATX pins.

its amd mounting bracket looks like you use intel cpu

just checked saw nothing no issues

I think you want to post a lot more pictures mate. I think you can rule out issues with motherboard if COU is working and just slow. dont expect paste to create these issues unless somehow it has gone to pins and screwing up with cpu that way. the most obvious reasons to be bad mount, one way or the other and you want to post puctures of the mount to make sure it looks correct I think.

I had a similar issue in the past wherein the processor had issues after change of thermal paste.

The problem after loss of two processors was isolated to faulty bearings in the cooler. A change of the processor and a new cooler and the temps were back to normal. Do check if the cooler fan RPM’s are stable or not. Check the temperature in BIOS only without booting into the OS.

Let it run for a few hours just like that and see if the temps are stable. In my case I found that the cooler ran perfectly when the CPU Case was kept horizontal, and I had issues as soon as the case was kept vertical (default way).

Found this out by loosing two processors, all because I wanted to save money and use the old CPU cooler. A costly lesson indeed!
