I have flight from delhi to bhubaneswar via air india express
Their carry in limit is 7kg
Checked in limit is 15kg
But I think my trolley weighs around 20kg
I have got mixed answers from people, some say domestic flights allow 20-25kg without any issue, while some say they have fixed limit, anything over that you have to pay the price.
Should I courier the additional 5kg?
Don’t wanna open my trolley while checking in , and discard things , that will be embarrassing.
Nope. Do not believe them. Airlines will try every thing to extract max money from you and no way they will allow 20 Kgs when limit is 15 Kgs. And charges per kg are very high.
If you absolutely need the things, courier via delhivery or so. Also with delhivery, I have seen their rates exponentially increase beyond 2Kg or so, so may be break into multiple packages, with each under 2Kg or so.
Don’t believe people who say airlines will allow excess of 5kgs. (They don’t even allow extra half kg) Airlines will weigh your check in baggage at bag counter (they sometimes weigh cabin bag too depending upon their mood)
You have two options - prepay for 5kg excess baggage for minimal discount online or pay at airport. Charges are usually around 500 (give or take a 100) depending upon airlines) per kg.
Or you can send it through courier/cargo/transport which will be cheaper for you.
Pre-book the extra 5kg online. It’s much cheaper than paying at the counter and saves you from the embarrassment of repacking at the airport. Couritering is an option, but excess baggage is usually more convenient.
It seems that way but you’re never going to see any of those people again so take that in stride and repack at your own pace.
I’ve had my fair share of repacking at the check-in counter then I learned of an amazing travel hack — I get the suitcases wrapped in plastic before check-in.
They don’t even look at the weight of the suitcase at that point, I think they rely on the wrapping company or think they’re not paid enough to tell a passenger he has to unpack his plastic wrapped suitcase.
That said, I was never more than 1kg over the limit.
FINAL update:
I asked at the counter what the limit is, there response was 15kg above that i have to pay.
Somehow I managed it to 14+6. I couriered the rest.
When we get the boarding pass and submit the checked trolley bag, the person said to just to ensure it doesnt have anything that has battery in it. thats it no weight check.
I asked her, dont they check the weight of the luggage? she said its fine, it will be verified later.
I am not sure if they really checked the weight or not.
