My Green Soul office chair has a small issue. Sometimes the chair will go down randomly when I’m just sitting without me touching the height-adjusting handle.
Has my cylinder gone bad, or is it something else ?
Gasket has gone bad…just get it replaced at local chair repair

Hydraulic cylinder has gone bad.
If it is out of warranty. This seems to be a good option.
I have been using this for 3 of my office chairs for past 1.5 years. it has been going good till now.
Took a piece of PVC plumbing pipe lying around, measured the right length, sawed it length-wise and applies some cable ties.

Can I replace the cylinder myself, or do we need special tooling to replace it ?
Also, the behaviour I described, do you think it is consistent with cylinder going bad, or can it be some other issue ?
Well, in your case, the hydraulic has gone bad. If the warranty is still viable, you can claim that, if not, you can replace it with those from local chair dealers or get one from amazon. not that hard to replace, you can look up tutorials on youtube.

Universal in terms of the hydraulic cylinder, but there may be variations in length of the part which plays a role in whether you want your chair high or low in the default position (without extending the chair). HIgher default height = long, lower default height = short. Length differences will be in inches 6”,8”,etc. You can measure the hydraulic cylinder in your chair if you want to use the same length.
In my case, I took the longer one so that even in the case that the hydraulic cylinder goes bust again (yes, i’ve replaced it before), the default sitting height is somewhat acceptable instead of dipping down being a dwarf at my own table.
I had ordered the one below in 2019 to replace the cylinder on my Godrej chair. Still working as it should be till now after replacement.
