John Calhoun with mice experiment (1970). A true experiment that still haunts scientists today

First i thought, its some random FB crap.. But this experiment is mentioned on wikipedia too..
“When a population loses purpose, meaning, and social bonds — it dies long before its body does.”

In the late 1960s, American ethologist Dr. John B. Calhoun built what he called a “Mouse Paradise” — a perfectly controlled world with unlimited food, water, and shelter.
No predators. No scarcity. No fear.
Only abundance.

At first, it was heaven. The mice thrived, multiplied, and built their tiny cities. But when their population swelled past 600, something began to unravel.

The strong claimed the best nesting areas.
Weaker males were bullied into corners.
Mothers stopped caring for their young — some even turned against them.
Violence erupted. Mating ceased.
And gradually, the colony lost its will to live.

Though the food never ran out, purpose did.

The final generations grew passive and detached — grooming endlessly, avoiding contact, showing no interest in survival or connection. Calhoun called this stage “the behavioral sink” — a collapse not of body, but of spirit.

When the last mouse died, the habitat still overflowed with everything they could ever need.

Calhoun repeated this experiment 25 times, and every time, the outcome was the same.
His conclusion echoed far beyond the cages:

“When a population loses purpose, meaning, and social bonds — it dies long before its body does.”

It seems plausible that Calhoun was responsible for creating the conditions for population collapse. He only cleaned out Universe 25 every six to eight weeks; disease and parasitism could account for many of the phenomena he thought were due to mere proximity.

Also, a working sewage system is vital for survival.

Taking sewage factor in mind, are we heading in the same direction? At least the western countries?

That is same with human society…

Human will not survive in perfect world..

We have evolved because of imperfect world … survival instinct..

That is why eastern civilization survived longest.. because they have to fight and survive

Society with perfect in everything starts decline as they do not have motive …

Similarly, there is also Rat Park - Wikipedia : In this case, rats were kept in a huge pleasure palace enclosure, but researchers gave them a limitless supply of cocaine. Rather than get addicted like lab rats do, these rats would drink the cocaine laced water sometimes but never seem to get addicted to it.

This contradicts Indian population in the 50’s . No purpose just make more babies .

1950’s India was primarily agrarian life, requires lot of family members to maintain that.
Now, agriculture is either for rich land owners or for those who have no options left.

Slightly off-topic: hamsters were successfully frozen solid and then thawed using microwaves in 1950s UK.

Before you get too excited about cryo-sleep of humans, the freezing and thawing doesn’t work quite as well for organisms larger than hamsters.

And also a not insignificant chance of kids not surviving into adulthood, so produce as many as you can while you can. Also, costs of child-rearing are also low when you don’t have to spend on education.

India’s life expectancy for 2025 is projected to be around 70.82 to 72.48 years.

However, there are significant regional differences, with some states and union territories experiencing much higher life expectancies than others. For example, Delhi is cited as having a life expectancy of 75.8 years, while Nagaland has one of 75.4 years and Madhya Pradesh has one of 67.4 years.

Good news is that perfect society will never exist. Animals can be satisfied with food and sex but humans want power and money, of which no amount satisfies them. Look at all the billionaires today, they are still pushing for more and more and more.

It is not the money alone . Power and purpose play an important role .

If insider trading was not possible , many Indian companies would have been bust a long time back .
