Last month , I got a subscription for Apple music and was blown away by the difference in Audio quality . Before this I had been using Spotify Premium since day 1 of its India release but decided it was time to switch . Now that I have used Apple music for a month its clear that the only place where apple music beats Spotify is Lossless audio quality . The UI is bad , switching from my mobile app to windows app isn’t smooth , recommendations are no good either and in general its the little things that are really annoying .
Now that Spotify has started rolling out Lossless and will probably introduce it in India starting next month I think I will switch back to Spotify . What about you guys ?
apple music is very slow for me and not have all the songs, can’t fetch from youtube as there are thousands of gem old songs not available on apple music or spotify.
Apple Music sucks (buggy, songs suddenly stop playing. Happens too many times to ignore). I’ve switched back and forth from Spotify to AM to Spotify to AM and now back on Spotify since 2-3 years. The only reason I had switched back to AM the second time around was the lossless quality. It was the only thing missing and now I’m glad it’s finally here.
I like Spotify for it’s sound quality and how great the ui/app are. Apple music sounds better only on wired, but has too slow app even for ios.
But Spotify never suggests the right songs. I listen to Telugu, English songs yet it fills all my feeds and suggestions with tamil songs. This was irritating and I stopped using Spotify.
Jiosaavn, even though quality is lower than both of those, the suggestions are spot on, but I don’t think jio will upgrade the quality.
Apart from lossless audio, spotify definitely has to implement showing content only from selected languages like jiosaavn.
If you are listening on iOS, then Spotify’s Ogg Vorbis format converted to AAC is significantly worse. Also having a lossless plan to listen to it using a lossy codec is pointless. Pretty much reduces its benefit to home listening.
Tried Spotify multiple times but the recommendations were too off. Never really felt like switching to Apple Music though iPhone is my primary device.
YouTube Premium purchase was mainly for video viewing but for the price, music does a great job of recommendation, not to say the lyrics integration and switch to video are very handy. Having AAC makes it great for use on iOS.
Otherwise, just download FLAC files every week for my discovered music and that usually is my go to option.
Obviously, we have to compromise a few things for the sake of convenience. Otherwise, wired+dac is usually good. But, as u said, if conversion happens before reaching the headset, then lossless may not be so good.
Maybe that’s one reason why I feel music feels better on my mid-range old android phone compared to iPhone.
Didn’t try yt music on ios. I decided I will never pay for youtube, so couldn’t try it out. But on revanced android, it doesn’t sound that good; just similar to jiosaavn. I remember long back, gaana had some better quality than jiosaavn, don’t know what happened to it.
There are 2 issues here. 1 - most movie songs don’t have flac files originally, we get converted files. 2- internet has mostly fake flac files, finding true flac is a task, but they exist.
Yes, regional files might be difficult to get though there are options to download lossless files from other providers like Deezer, Tidal and Quboz that keep dying and coming up in new avatars.
If tamil movie songs are available in lossless in spotify I will switch immediately from apple music. apple music app is cumbersome esp. in my android. and so many songs in my playlist keep disappearing/disabled! I guess it is due to rights issues?
Wish there was a way to import playlists from one service to another
For devotional songs YouTube music cannot be beaten… all the obscure songs are available.
I’ve gone through this headache so you don’t have to - Download switcheroo on android . I transferred my 2000+ songs from Spotify to Apple music with this for free . As for YT music if you have YT premium they offer a premium version of a popular tool that lets you transfer playlists . Or just use switcheroo if you’re on the free version .
Lossless will only sound good on wired, that too with a dac, without that you won’t find a difference with mp3 quality. Plus good headphones also needed. It’s an expensive hobby.
Tbh, most can’t differentiate between different audio qualities only a few people can identify which is flac track and which is mp3 320kbps VBR/CBR. I personally can’t do it. I am only able to make out diff between mp3 320kbps vs mp3 192 kbps above mp3 320 kbps vbr everything is same for me.
