Need help with SATA enclosure issue

I have a 1TB 2.5" laptop hdd. To use as an external hdd I bought this adaptor

When I connect it to my laptop, it detects the HDD. I am on linux, so it shows a usb disk in the gnome disk utility. But nothing is showing up in “df -h”

Following are the output:

lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,TYPE,FSTYPE,MOUNTPOINT
NAME SIZE TYPE FSTYPE MOUNTPOIN
sda 0B disk
nvme0n1 476.9G disk

dmesg | grep -i sda

I dont know if it is the enclosure issue or my HDD got corrupted somehow? I dont have a spare pc to check HDD.

The HDD is ntfs format

@tooknox may have an idea

Just checked my hdd is fine. Must be faulty enclosure

confirm that port was USB 3 and not USB 2. Try Hiren Boot DVD live Windows booting and check again.

If anther enclosure gives same issue then u might need a y cable. Cablet is not bad but Orico is better.

got a replacement today and I am facing same issue with this one.

Already tried the both with usb 3 ports. Havent tried live windows booting but didnt detect in a windows 7 pc.
what is a y cable and can you suggest one?

What is the current rating of the 2.5” 1TB HDD? Most likely it will be written on the sticker on top side of the HDD. What flavour of Linux you are using. Did you try Live Mint?

Windows 7 PC may or may not have USB 3 support, unless supported by third party drivers.

i am using linux mint, idk how but i see the disk in linux lsblk now.

Replaced the cablet with a pibox, still same issue. the disk is unable to mount.

I dont know how to find rating because there are multiple AVPs printed on the hdd.

i use debian, and have used several enclosures for transferring stuff. i never faced any issue. maybe try different distro or different drive?

hey i tried to insert the windows 7 laptop using new enclosure, now i can access the file system.

but not in linux mint, formatting is difficult because i dont have enough storage on windows 7 to backup and format as exFAT. any other solutioon

you can transfer the files in linux, using ‘rsync -avh /folder” after mounting then format it in windows7 using diskpart “clean“ then “convert gpt“ and just make an exFAT partition. reinsert in linux.

if you can see the drive in gnome-disk-utility, then why not just format there?

my linux is 500GB and windows 7 ins 80GB

taking backup is tough

what is your ultimate goal? is your drive readable/writable in linux?
lsblk to do what exactly?

if your problem is only to reformat the drive, then there are ways, if your problem is to solve this problem then chatgpt might be able to help you, otherwise try using different distro.

ulitmate goal is to use the drive with the data in it.

I cannot format the drive becaise i lose the data. i need to access the files on my linux laptop, windows7 belongs to a friend.

okay, but what is the problem exactly? is it not getting mounted? is it not readable or writable?

on linux it cannot mount, but shows up in lsblk. some issue with ntfs i guess.

maybe it is MSDOS and GPT issue? try some another ntfs drive if you have it. atleast you will be able to conclude the problem. if it requires reformat, then gotta do it.

somehow it is now opening in linux as well, no idea what happened.

if you have changed the enclosures, then pretty sure it’s the drive giving issues. maybe a reinitialize with gpt/msr would solve it.

but its working fine now on linux, should i still reformat it?

cant answer that. just hope that the data doesnt go corrupt in future. do have backups
