I think the only “future proofing” you can do is to get a (45nm Q9450) quadcore with 4GB RAM and maybe an ATI 3870X2.
Buying this kind of system today will last 2 yrs thats all.
By the end of 2009 or early 2010 it will be time for Intel Nehalem/ AMD Shanghai mainstream desktop technology (or whatever their codenames might be) which will need newer mobo and almost certainly new RAM chips. Even video cards will need to be upgraded with PCI express ver 2.0.
Rather than trying to get components today that will work in 2009/10 its better to sell of your PC or exchange it for a brand new one then…
I have a budget of 75k and am sick of waiting so will get a Q6600 with 8800GT on Abit IP35E in the next week or so, because the new 45nm quads will go over my budget. I know I most likely will regret it soon, with new 45nm quads and video card price drops heh I will need to run later games at lower resolution than what my 24 inch Dell E248WFP LCD can do…
If I had a budget of 90k then I would wait for the new 45nm quads and get a 3870x2 card…
Some good info here, thanks to all.
Well I did chat and decide with “Phoenix” last night about what options i got etc, "
hmm - still thinking.
Anyways I guess the TruE120 would be fine enough for cooling. Would Scythe fans be available here ?
Well config cost>performance wise this is what I’ve come down too, modify a bit here and there maybe, what do you say ?
Any changes you have in mind , keeping the cost in mind too.
@lethal: you dont have a monitor listed in your list posted above? Get the Dell E248WFP for around 18.5k from “dingemini312” in the Hot Deals section!
Also, puhleese get rid of any dual cores from your options and only look at the upcoming Intel 45nm quad cores, preferably the Q9450… pretty please?
Lets see, rough config, if I were in your shoes:
Q9450 - 15,000 (estimated)
Abit IP35E - 6,000
2 x 2GB DDR2-800 RAM - 4,500
ATI 3870X2 1GB GPU - 22,500
Dell E248WFP - 19,000
500GB HDD - 5,500 (can a second one later if needed)
DVD DL writer - 1,500
Cabby - 6,000 Antec?
PSU - 8,250 Tagan?
Cooling/Fans - 4,000
This is 90-95k total… I might have missed the fact that you dont need/want a monitor, keyboard/mouse, UPS? But you can sell off your current monitor and get the 24 LCD
edit: In fact, I would suggest not to go for fancy mobo and SLI and dual HDD etc right now, get a “basic” system say within 75-85K which in 2 yrs time you can sell off and get a brand new Nehalem/Shanghai based system Just my 80 paise (approx 2 cents at current exchange rates!)
Just one second, the P35s are not fully compatible with the 45nms and have shown problems when coupled with them , thats y did not suggest him the P35 Series, even tho they have turned out to be the best opton for most of us…
Well , at this point , DDR3 has no significant performance boost considering the price…instead, double the RAM in the DDR2 variant, he will still save 10k on that , plus he will save on goin for the ddr3 board, these savings can be input into a better CPU and a better GPU , which will ultimately give him a higher perf boost.
