This isn’t super new, but while shopping for monitors, I was reminded of QDEL technology that was showcased in CES 2025.
Here’s an Ars Technica article about it:
tl;dr:
QDEL (aka NanoLED), short for quantum dot electroluminescent, is an emerging display technology that could replace OLED in premium TVs, monitors, and other devices. Unlike OLED, QDEL doesn’t require a backlight. Quantum dots themselves emit light, which produce brighter, more vibrant displays with wider color gamuts. While still in development, commercial availability is expected by 2026. QDEL could offer better cost efficiency than OLED and could potentially outlast it, though challenges remain, especially with blue quantum dots’ longevity. As manufacturing processes improve, QDEL may become a strong contender in the race for the next generation of high-end display tech.
It was pretty hyped up immediately after CES, but there hasn’t been a lot on the news about it lately. If the rumors are to be believed, it’ll be a cheaper alternative to OLED that’s more resistant to burn-in while still matching OLEDs in visual quality. Reddit seems to have mixed feelings about it, but we’ll see, I guess. Interesting stuff if you ask me.
