Review: Motorola Moto G - The Poor Man's Nexus!

When’s the last time you bought a dual sim phone and expected to get updates ?

you got 4.4, so any bets on anything beyond. Mid range phones get one update. Better ones may get more.

this is why i wonder whether the moniker ‘poor man’s nexus’ applies to the dual sim moto g.

Can see it applying more to the single sim version as that will be supported way beyond what the vendor will provide.

Only a few stand out and out of those few the pricing looks unattractive (for now).

The main reason is that there is just one e-retailer selling. Once moto g appears in shops the price will inevitably rise.

^^ The Moto G is seeing success not just in India but around the world. That says something.

And more availability rarely raises prices. If sold in shops prices will drop not the other way around.

yes

8GB for 12.5k
16GB for 14k

import price by the thousands 10.5k for 16Gb and 9.4k for 8GB

that’s not a lot of margin left for brick & mortar shops. Typically i see retail prices at close to double (for higher end models) what the import declared prices are.

FK sells it for cheap because it comes straight form China to FK in blr and then delivered by courier. not many middlemen in that loop.

Very well Written @@bluevolt Thanks a lot

thanks for info

Nice review! Well done mate.

Thanks for the review. Bought one for my brother and he’s happy with it.

Nice review, is that a turquoise back cover?

The best detailed review.. nicely done mate keep it up

nice review..
i’m going to order one today or tomorrow..
any major cons so far rather than some small bugs and glitches

Anybody using any custom ROM on the Moto G? I am finding the stock Android ROM a bit too buggy. Apps keep crashing frequently and lot of Google bloat ware.

After trying every ROM on my nexus I settled with slimroms
There is support for moto g as well..

Try CM11.. Has good dual sim suport and good battery life. Using it more than 2 weeks and very happy with it

a good and fair review. a little too many pictures though .

I have read reports of poor camera performance.. Pictures lacking in contrast and colors.. Video recording not upto mark either.. Any opinions on how far these are true?

Thanks.

Picture quality outdoors is good, indoor is bad.
video quality is good. no complaints for me.

After using CM11 / Omni on my previous Moto Defy, I find the vanilla android on Moto G lacking lot of features (even some basic ones).

*Edit: *Con - No RGB LED for notification. Only white color for all events.

For me the best thing about this phone is that it has support for custom ROMs and Kernels at XDA. It will keep getting android updates for some time at least (unofficially). I have just two queries from users of this phone:

  1. How is the camera? I bought the procapture camera app for my last android phone and it gave a much better result as compared to the default app (Xolo Q700i, now dead and discarded). Will the results with Moto G be good too? I click a lot of photos with my phone and was really happy with the Q700i camera when used with procapture.

  2. How is the ASS? I live in Chandigarh and there is a service center here but that doesn’t matter much if the service bottleneck is somewhere else. Xolo has service centers all across the country but still the ASS is unacceptable.

An update to L will confirm the status of poor-mans-Nexus.
