Rockboxing the Sansa Clip+ and Fuze

Ran Battery bench for my clip+. Managed to run 4 hours with 33% battery, playing FLACs from microSD card with volume at 3dB. Not bad, battery takes a serious hit after reaching 5%, lasted just 18 mins instead of the predicted one hour.

Are you serious -19 hrs ? That almost sounds impossible. During my testing of battery life using differentbitrate files the max juice I could get out of a Clip+ was 10 hrs with 128 kbps files , stock earphones and 0% screen usage. This is without memory card as well.

Otherwise , It gives ~7-8 hrs with 320 files and a better IEM. 6 hrs with memory card is the worst Ive seen .

Yes, I am serious. It did gave 19hrs of playtime.

My method:

Copy songs on clip+ with specific total length(total time) of songs (it was 4:12hrs for me).

With battery at 100%, play all songs. So, after all songs have been played, it would shut-down automatically.(i.e after 4:12hrs of playtime for me)

After it get’s shut down, restart process and note how many times(times played) all songs were played until battery is drained.

Now with battery drained calculate total time songs were played:

total time*times played

Also when battery drains, ideally 100% of songs will not be played(i.e say from 4hrs of total time, playing stopped when 2hrs of songs were played). Add that to total time. Now you get total play time.

I used PL11 while testing and volume was at mid level. No memory card was used.

I also thought that battery backup would be around 12hrs as 15hrs has been stated by company, was surprised to see 19hrs of playback.

Charge to 100%, start battery_bench in plugins-> applications, play songs and leave it. it will create a detail file like the one I posted before.

Then i connected my clip+ to my laptop and still the battery level never moved.

Then i restarted in OF and then connected to laptop and it is charging now.

So for some reason it does not charge when it in rockbox mode

For un-rockboxing, you have to simply delete the .rockbox folder and put the original firmware file in the root directory and start your Clip.

You need to modify and compile the bootloader for that. AFAIK I haven’t seen such a bootloader for Clip.

RB’d my Clip+ and enjoying every second of it

This is the right way of doing things:

Windows

* Make sure your player is in MSC mode.

* Download and Extract the normal build (rockbox.zip) onto your device.

* Create a folder 'rbinstall' in your on the Desktop

* Extract the OF, the bootloader AND mkamsboot into that folder.

* Open a new command promt window (Windowskey+R->cmd.exe). CD to the 'rbinstall' folder ('cd Desktop\rbinstall')

* Run mkamsboot from the command line window you opened in the previous step, passing the name of the OF file you've downloaded and the the bootloader file you've downloaded, as well as a name you can chose yourself for the patched output file

  (e.g. 'mkamsboot.exe fuzea.bin bootloader-fuze.bin patched.bin')

* Retry or abort if it does not report success!

* Copy the output file to the root of your device and rename it to whatever the OF file you've downloaded was named

* Safely eject, unplug USB and wait for the firmware update to finish.

* You've successfully installed the bootloader and Rockbox. It boots by default. For booting the OF press |<< very quickly or plug the cable in while it's off (plugging the cable doesn't work on Clipv2 and Clip+).

Extract the Rockbox folder from the zip file to the root folder of the player (Not the microSD).

Forget about adding any more files on the root folder of the player for now

Create a folder named rbinstall on your PCs desktop (To make things easier )

Copy the files bootloader-clipplus.sansa (here), mkamsboot.exe (here) and the original firmware file (clppa.bin) from here to the rbinstall folder that was created in the previous step.

Fuze V2 Users : Copy the files bootloader-fuzev2.sansa (here), mkamsboot.exe (here) and the original firmware file (fuzpA.bin) from here to the rbinstall folder that was created in the previous step.

Run Command Prompt and navigate to the rbinstall folder.

Run the command mkamsboot.exe clppa.bin bootloader-clipplus.sansa patched.bin

FuzeV2 Users : Run the command mkamsboot.exe fuzpA.bin bootloader-fuzev2.sansa patched.bin

The command prompt should look like this

You’ll now have a file named patched.bin in the rbinstall folder.

Copy the patched.bin file (only that file) to the root of the player and rename it to clppa.bin.

FuzeV2 Users : Dont have the Fuze yet Should rename the patched file to fuzpA.bin after copying it to the root.

Safely Remove the device from the PC now and unplug it. Firmware upgrade will start immediately and the unit will power off once the update is done. Start it and enjoy RB

I am not sure but updating the firmware of your sansa should help in removing it completely. I suggest you try this.

1. Remove the rock box related folders and files that you had put in.

2. Download the sansa fuze firmware (even if you have latest one, still reflash it). I suppose that would require you to put that FW file in root of your sansa.

3. Disconnect the play and let it flash your sansa.

This process i guess should remove rockbox completely.

Loving the improvement in SQ at lot. Not sure if that is psycological or it has really improved but i feel great
The bass adjustment is a boon to bass heads like me. The equalizer settings are just awesome.
Btw what does this crossfade mean ??

when a song ends the song fades. similarly when the next song starts the song volume gradually rises. this is crossfade

BTW, I charged my clip with OF, then switched to RB. now I have 100% battery
