Securing Shared Network Folder

Hey guys,

As most of you know, I have a home server setup with the network drives shared.

Now a lot of people come home, who use the WiFi, and they can access my data through Network places directly.

I’d like to password lock the shared folders.

The server runs Windows XP SP2. Thanks!

If your network shares are on NTFS, then you can easily restrict access on user based.

^ Yes they are NTFS. Could you please elaborate? Thanks!

You need XP professional for this though.

^ I’ve already set that up.

What I want to do is, allow only specific users to even access the files. Like a password for the folder shares.

Clearly you haven’t. See the second link, which tells you how to use advanced sharing (even the first one tells you how to switch it off). It says how to set permissions to limit access only to certain users. So people will need to know the username and password of that user to get access.

^ Thanks a ton, got it!
