Can u geeks pls discuss abt AMD Cool’n’Quiet issues. i checked some sites – even TE has a thread by undertaker where he had probs with JAVA on Firefox where it was discusses that CnQ rapidly changes the Voltage for the Processor thus putting sudden abrupt loads on PSU which can result in PS failure.
some other sites i read abt some Software incompatibilities with CnQ also
I wanted 2nd opinion abt these issues from u guyz.
as in my previous thread, i just switched from a P4 3 ghz to a 3000+ & one of the biggest issues was that i wanted a calm n Quiet Pc when i m not gaming. My comp is always on – 24/7 (if No load shading is done) since it serves as a server to 50 odd comps on my LAN & constant downloads from interent too. My pentuim used to grunge all the time whether im gaming or its left alone
I guess what CnQ implies is really fascinating. when my comp is simply on for some Downloads & uploads, it sh;d be running at its bare minimum needed, so power is also saved & less of heat is dissipated enhancing life of all the inbound peripherals. But then, it sh;d not be a Pain in the Ass also as i dont want any of my functionalities ( hardware or software ) to suffer just because of it. I got very Crucial DATA & other things

Got an Asus A8N-E by the way running an AMD64 3000+ winchester with 1 gb hynix & 3 x 250gb seagate SATA HDD’s
hmmm cool and quiet is a good technology IMO. its designed to reduce heat,power consumption and ultimately increase the lifespan of your comp..
see it this way…
many people usually keep thier comp on 24*7… mostly for downloading…for this you dont need to to keep running your comp at full speed ... and maximum noise.... cool and quiet will automatically lower the speed (usually 200*5)... so it consumes less electricity and less heat.. also i dont think it would chk itself constantly.. rather it would adjust to the load. that`s what my noob brain thinks..
i have been using cool and quiet for a few days too..
idle temp - 38C (C & Q enabled) and 43-44C(C & Q disabled)
loads temps are the same for both though… at 48C.. (at stock obviously)
but you can try and experiment and see if it works for you..
I had enabled CnQ but whenever i used t play any games, pop, farcry they would show that my pc was running at 800 Mhz, so i removed it and now both the games show the true speed 1.8 Ghz ( have a 2800 amd 64)
Dont know why but my speed used to remain at 800 mhz, be it gaming, video encoding or surfing.
Like from 1.8 GHz to 800MHz. That is why CnQ is for just downloading stuff. But when you want to play any games, then you need to disable CnQ otherwise, your PC will be too slow.
It reduces the voltage to the CPU and reduces the speed of the CPU. This obviously means that the CPU will consume less power and generate less heat. And the quiet feature because the CPU fan will run slower. SO, the fan noise is lesser.
MY advice is to keep CnQ disabled for games, encoding audio, video, etc… but if you are only keeping it for download and uploads, the CnQ will be fine.
Yeah, I second Nikhil view, my 3000+ Winnie was also being shown as 800Mhz and voltages were really low in CPU-Z. I can’t use it anyways as my comp is overclocked now;)
so to conclude, in lame (gamer) terms the Cool’n’quiet is buggy. It does ower down the CPU clocl speed when not needed but as it is supposed to increase the power of the CPU when needed by games & other demanding application, it doesnt , right ??? thats what u all mean ??

hmmm i never had any probs running the comp at full speed(1.8 ghz) when playing games or running benchies..
the procy automantically scales upto the load when cpu utilization is 100% and comes down to 1 ghz when im running windows.. isnt there any software available to chk the chipet fan speed?? and the temps too..

When I play games it goes up to 2000 Mhz
other times it works at 800 Mhz
Wait a sec, are u guys enabling it from the BIOS or what?
My mobo does not have a bios option, and IO heard that it shud be kept disabled for those which do.
guys if u are having problems dont forget to update the amd cpu identification driver from amd site. I have no problems even while gaming. The speed tops up when needed.
Yeah, u need the driver for it.
Which may be why it isn’t working on your system. The driver is not present in XP (32 bit) and if it does not come with ur mobo, then it needs to be dlded from AMD’s site. Try doing that and see what happens.
well as far as i read – basically C’n’Q is a bios option & it needs to be enabled from the bios, then install ur AMD Driver for XP & set the power saving to minimal.. isnt that the way it shld work ?
pls elaborate on Kingercool’s lines so that there is no confusion. U guyz mean that if u disable it in the bios & just install AMD drivers in XP, it shld run fine ??
