Shoutbox on TE!

which is better..

we started off with te-chat with a blast..but no one using it..or seldom ppl come n go.. why dont we start shoutbox on testing mode… in a new page(to reduce queries if possible like te-chat)

then no flash plugin no login troubles etc i suppose..

if this has been discussed earlier, leave it off…

Well i used the TEChat when it was introduced but after that never used it.
as it was heavy on my system.

Remember, we use ShoutBox more than we the Chat feature.

And that shoutbox for vB could need some coding and simply a hack wont do.

I wud advice againts shotbox for the followig reason

  1. Looks fugly :face_with_tongue:
  2. Slows forum down considerbly
  3. Difficult to moderate…

no use of shoutbox IMHO.. chat feature too dosent do a lot of good really, coz it wud have some excitement only it the first few months as we have seen and it gradually wears out..

wat on earth is a shoutbox??

BTW i prefer the chat cuz i get some personal space…errr room where i can shout wateva i want to and speak with that dumb fella who sits there.(i mean dumbo)

ill like a shoutbox…even though it will slow down the forum a bit..but its better than having a chatroom where no one comes

Shoutbox and chat serve different purposes so there is no point in using one as a an alternative to the other. General discussion or day-to-day chatting cannot be done using shout-box. Shout-box is just for leaving comments and tid bits that’s it. If you guys want to popularise TE chat, i suggest that you start a thread and meet up @ a given time.

if you guys are patient .. i will make life a bit more easier by integrating who’s in chat on main page.. though i can’t give ETA cos there is a bug which has got me all crazy. But its on my hit list to crack so one of these days you will be surprized

IRC Chat thing which is there on Toms Hardware & Mk5.org.
Doesnt consume much of system resources.

Think its a java applet based IRCChat.
Something of this sort.
Check out the speed & resource consumption.

i dont mind if all are in te chat :wink:
some needs flash plugin or some other needs java applets etc.. so just thought..

never visited TE chat after the first time…

wud be better to have a chat system thats as responsive as yahoo messenger or IRC :slight_smile:

since the TE irc channel didnt really take off, how about adding a shoutbox to top or side of the site here?

we asked for java chat too , no responses to that either :angry:

There was clear answer to that and it was N and O NO.

Java chat puts too much stress on servers. So hosting company will not allow it to be hosted on their server.

I still dont get the need for all this. Fine, some people wanted IRC and unofficial IRC was set up and it failed.

This is tech forum and i dont see the need of Chat or shout box for that. Spammers have General Talk anyway :face_with_tongue:

I mean tell me one good reason why Shout box is needed here. Or for that matter chat.

There are other places to chat.

And we have IM as well. Almost 100 of TE members are on my MSN list anyway.
