SSD failed/dead? Any possibility of revival?

hi,

i have an adata su650 250gb sata ssd that i had purchased from a friend in 2022, and had plugged-in into my main pc. neither he nor me had used it much. most times the pc remained off & whenever i’d use the pc, the drive was rarely used (it was acting as the games-installation drive). now i have given off that pc to a friend, but had pulled out that drive to be used as os drive in another pc. it was being detected fine in the bios for a couple of days but since yesterday it suddenly disappeared from the list of available drives in bios. used a sata-to-usb adapter to check it on a laptop, but failed to be read there too. whereas another ssd works fine in the same setup. dont know what or how it failed.

i have tried the ‘wait for atleast 5 mins on the bios screen after plugging-in the ssd’ and power-cycling methods, to no avail. even pulled out the board from the casing to inspect for any physical damage, but could see none. so am assuming that the drive has failed & is probably dead now. do you see any possibility of its revival? any other method(s) that anyone could suggest to try pls?

thanks.

  1. You can try searching for firmware updates just incase Adata provides it.
  2. If not, manual firmware update/flash. This will require disassembling the SSD and put it into safe mode(? not sure what its called exactly) by shorting 2 pins on the PCB. You will have to look at the controller chip and manually find a firmware along with a programmer software for it. Some Russian forums usually have them.
  3. Reflow or reball the NAND chips and/or the controller chip if you have a hot air soldering station.

Practically speaking, none of the these solutions are likely to work. Adata ssd typically die permanently in such situations.

thanks for your replies guys!

am ordering another one anyway but points 1 & esp 2 seems interesting & could be tried in spare time. will read about it. thanks!

Points 2 and 3 are not worth the fiddling process and it may render the ssd useless esp. if its under warranty your replacement chances also get killed!

Yea, obviously if still in warranty get it replaced. Those are last ditch options. Worth only if your other option is the trash bin.

yes that is exactly the case with that ssd, not under warranty & last ditch options.
