TechEnclave - A tech forum?

I have been posting since the forum got transferred to discourse without fail every month.

I asked only once in a thread about the points but there were many others who got nominated before me.

I am posting without fail every month and week without looking at 3 month rule for getting MOTM.

Before I used to help with Buying advice for only desktops. I used to have several budgets formats and I change according to the requirements of the buyer and post in the buying advice threads.

Now people are rarely asking for buying advice.

@OMEGA44-XT replaced me somehow in giving advice in buying advice threads.

In Digit I am the specialist for Desktop PC buying advice. Now there also @OMEGA44-XT replaced me by giving advice much faster.

Censoring topics will reduce engagement but there are some trolls on this forum who spend all their free time arguing with strangers on the internet in the middle of the night over topics that don’t even concern them remotely.

I don’t understand their mindset, do they not have a life or a job like us peasants lol ?

Don’t chase after useless metrics. Does these points matter irl- no, right?

Find satisfaction in helping others. Maybe in future someone here will help you too.

We are afterall a close community.

Anyway, we have all discussed a lot of general points about making the forum a better place.

Let’s all contribute in meaningful ways :slightly_smiling_face:

No offence but I think TE has already lost its personality to the hive mind.

Its the third - don’t give a damn, its my way or the highway.

With the kind of membership and the evolving tech like AI, things have changed lately.

There are only so many members here who are doing a PC build daily and ‘ll have questions. There are only so many interesting DIYs, tutorials anybody can do and share here frequently due to being occupied with their own work/jobs, ones that are niche, interesting and no copy paste jobs.

Even for appliance, mobile & laptop queries, people have youtubers and AI these days for general queries and recommendations.

I’ve also noticed that the reseller, offers and deals section posts have reduced significantly due to the current hig price situations. So, other categories seem to naturally standout.

If your past nostalgia of TE being a “pure tech forum” is based on those standards alone, its time to realize that the tech landscape has changed for better or worse.

Not exactly true, I see a lot of excellent new posts on homelabs (a new section), os, gaming and networking. Maybe pure H/w is down but tech is not limited to that.

But then again, I think its better if Techenclave was renamed to Newsenclave since News is the need of the hour.

I didn’t want to post anymore on this topic, but it feels like I have to vent this one last time. Like I said before, if you don’t want to take feedback under consideration, that is fine. Just make it clear that it is not wanted. You keep telling users that you would consider it and then completely neglect it or ignore it.

The only way to increase higher quality posts/good contribution is to stop rewarding and encouraging users who abuse the current system, but you have decided that it is not what the forum needs. The tirade against a user you speak of is not even my main concern. I’ve already used Ignore option for him and I still see useless posts by him on the front page and ignore them anyway. A valid complaint, I feel, is low effort posts and rewarding them with stats/points, I don’t care if they get awards every day, I care that it encourages such behaviour and increases such posts, which imo is detrimental to this forum.

If voting is not feasible, I would prefer a complete block, more than what the current Ignore option provides. The other party should not be able to see anything a user posts and vice versa. The current Ignore is quite useless and half-baked.

Keeping this aside, what the OP suggests feels valid criticism. Is it really a tech forum in its current avatar? The forum feels entirely too negative to me, and I freely admit, if not for the marketplace, I would have said my farewell long back. Political debates devolve into personal attacks and character assassination frequently and regularly. Language/region wars often use derogatory terms for whole regions/groups. I even remember a few threads which were self-loathing as to how Indians in general are the worst people. Meme thread often is littered with misogynistic posts with outdated boomer humour. People sharing their personal lives with Too-Much-Information feels like reading cheap newspaper’s naughty columns. Again some people talk about women there like they are entirely living in a men’s world and have no mothers or sisters. Please don’t ask me for examples of the above, I can list them, but I would rather not. Half or even more of them are on my ignore list now. All of this is what we as a community decided is okay to share here. Some even enjoy them.

I often wonder how unwelcome women must feel in tech spaces like this. If you have a young child, boy or girl, aged 10-15, would you feel comfortable sharing this forum with them? I am not going to like the answers most probably, so consider it a hypothetical question. That was the age I and many others developed lifelong interest in tech. But maybe the forum needs its middle-aged men more than impressionable teens.

I would rather have a forum that keeps all this noise outside and focuses on the tech. I realise I must be a very small minority and henceforth will stop suggesting changes.

/end rant

I am out of this topic. Please don’t quote or tag me here anymore.

This thread has become an n-way Mexican standoff now.

I don’t know how practical this would be but we can do an experiment and run this forum say for 7-15 days like a pure tech forum (eg. mydigitallife, techpowerup or guru3d) and see how much content gets pushed, If the results are not satisfactory Mods can revert it back to current mode. Except for people who don’t like experiments (where x ∈ ℕ), I don’t see anyone having a problem with this, (at least theoretically).

You said dont quote me but just clarifying..

If I create a shit post on you and you create a shit post about me, we both endup being ignorant of each other’s posts while the community gets to enjoy the show. That’s how it’ll turn out or even worse. So, no it may sound great in theory but not in practice.

I can point some examples of misogyny coming from much younger and the supposedly liberal and enlightened Gen-Z folks. So, its best not to generalize assumptions.

I believe him when he says that he isn’t in it for the numbers or MOTM. I think it is rather the need, no strike that, obsession to connect virtually and he posts whatever he posts just for that. Maybe just once it would be better to seek some counseling instead of depending on TE as a therapy.

PS : I have sought counseling and it was really really helpful. In order to do that, you need to first admit that something is wrong.

Actions Taken - Closing Thread

MotM Scoring Changes (Effective Immediately): Tech News section - No points awarded

  • Topic creation remains at 5 points - Creating discussions is valuable and should be rewarded

Content Standards:

  1. All news posts must use the AI News Summarizer or be paraphrased in your own words. Direct copy-paste of articles will be removed. We have an autoforum AI tool specifically for this - use it.
  2. Personal life discussions belong in Private Lounge or a dedicated personal thread. Hijacking unrelated tech threads with personal issues will result in post removal.
  3. Tech News category already exists separately - mute it if news content isn’t what you want to see. The tools are already there.
  4. Topics auto-close after 60 days of inactivity - This prevents never-ending mega-threads and forces fresh discussions. Moderators may close/split problematic threads earlier as needed.
  5. Report misogyny, regional slurs, and toxic behavior - We’ll enforce community standards. Use the report button so mods can take action.

What This Thread Actually Revealed:

After reading all posts, the diagnosis is clear: this became less about improving the forum and more about targeting one user while avoiding the real issue.

The real issue: Lack of quality tech contributions from the broader membership.

Some of you list projects you’re supposedly working on but choose not to share because “the effort’s not worth it.” That’s your prerogative, but you don’t get to withhold contribution AND complain about lack of content. If you’re not posting tech content but complaining there isn’t enough tech content, you’re part of the problem.

The Tools Already Exist:

  • Mute categories you don’t like
  • Ignore users who annoy you
  • Customize your feed however you want
  • Report content that violates standards

What We’ve Fixed:

  • Tech News spam no longer rewarded in MotM
  • Off-topic contribution separated from tech contribution scoring
  • Content standards are clear and will be enforced
  • Moderation tools are in place

What’s Still Missing:

  • YOU actually posting the tech content you claim to want

30-Day Check-In:

We’ve adjusted incentives. We’ve clarified rules. The platform exists. The audience exists.

Now it’s on the community: Create one quality tech post per week. Share your builds, your repairs, your solutions, your questions. That’s what will shift the feed.

Let’s revisit in 30 days and see if the tech section actually looks different or if this was all just noise.

Thread closed. New suggestions can be raised in a fresh topic after the 30-day mark if needed.
