When they were little, I put their poop in the litterbox and due to that smell, they used to start doing their business. Later as they grow up, I move the litterbox near to the garden and then they start their business on their own.
If there is any stubborn kitty, I reduce the litter sand day by day and they take their business elsewhere.

If the litter box is not smelly and is full of sand, they’ll poop in the box itself.
