What should I upgrade?

Wasn’t talking to you :poop:

Just came back to this. Please dont argue over this brothers. Thank you for sharing your thoughts tho. And with the reasearch i was able to do and understand, the 5950x isn’t a big performance bump (for my use case scenario). The only reason i’m even consdering it, is cause my current CPUs warranty is over and rest of my components are relatively newer! So i dont want to leave the AM4 ecosystem just yet.

Ideally i want the 5700/5800x3d. but if i dont get it, i’ll go for the 5950x/5900xt/5900x. one of them depending on how cheap i’m able to get them.

Rest thank you again guys.

Wanted to understand whether going from a 5700x to a 5900xt, is worth it? or a good decision? I’m confused cause what I read online, is that AMD released the 5900xt as a way to salvage their inventory of bins/chipset for the 5000 series. so some of them if not most, aren’t the best quality of silicone for this reason. and it runs hot.

Please tell me if i’ve got it wrong. also, i game on 1440p. I edit videos on premiere pro. and when I play, I tend to stream my game on discord. have a few tabs of chrome open in the back playing music. so imo, the 5900xt should help my cause and go the extra mile too!

Please let me know your thoughts on this CPU. Especially people who own one. whats it like. How are thermals? Do you need a beast of a cooler to keep it cool. I plan to undervolt it too. so i’m thinking i should be good. but can’t be too sure. so yeah. looking forward to what you guys have to say!

Absolutely worth it if u need the extra cores. 5900x/5950x/5900xt are all great for multicore workloads.

Power wise, they consume around 142-150W without PBO and ~200W with PBO enabled. I personally use an AIO only for the ability to touch my mobo post install. A peerless assassin type AIR cooler will work just fine.

Grab whichever is cheaper per core. or if u absolutely need 16 cores 5900xt is great.

I mean the first thing you should check is how much is current CPU utilization when you’re doing things you would do after upgrading.

If it’s less than 60% you don’t need an upgrade.

For games, it might be different since only few cores will be used so even at 20% utilization you might be maxing your cpu, but 5700x to 5900xt doesn’t have much IPC gains, so you would not gain much here.

You have given very little information to let you get true help.

5900XT + 5070 would be good for productivity + gaming, minimal bottleneck in games. I had an i5 12400 + 7900GRE earlier, there was indeed some CPU bottleneck in CPU heavy games like CoD BO6 MP, but otherwise its performance was close to online benchmark numbers at 1440p, esp for SP games like GoW Ragnarok.

AG620 should be enough to keep the rig cool as CPU draws ~150W w/o OC. Even at 200W, this cooler should be fine, so you can try to UV & OC.

6 months back, I would not have recommended this at all. Intel ultra 7 265K costs same & performs much better at a slightly higher platform cost back then. But DDR5 RAM prices are getting out of hand. Used DDR4 3200MHz RAM might be a good bet.

Price for the 5900XT (new or used, whichever you’re considering) ?

If you’re thinking of getting a brand new one for 30k then just don’t. Get yourself a i7 265k on a Z series motherboard.

There are few very reasons to buy a new 5900XT/5950X for 30k.

If you don’t mind waiting out the insane ram prices rn I would tell you to just bite the bullet and upgrade to an x3d AM5 system after ddr5 prices come down. Reminder again that a 9800x3d+good b850 mobo+32gb 6000mts cl36 ddr5 bundle is still around 600usd at micro center so 30k on an AM4 proc seems unreasonable

I did the exact same upgrade 2 weeks back. My 5900xt is rock solid at -30 CO and easily does 5ghz so it’s not always a bad bin. Using arctic cooler 36 and it is always below 87-88c

How I wish we had something like micro center here. Their bundle deals are the GOAT

Okay, so ill just set some more context. My pc is a blend of a gaming pc and workstation. So I edit heavy files on Premiere Pro. I game often, and while gaming usually streaming on discord for my mates, have google chrome open. etc.

I found a 5900xt for 29k online, and was almost about to get it. but my issue was that I currently have a H510 case (basically no intake). And before anyone jumps on me as to why would i get this case, my friends gifted it to me. lol. So i’ve had it ever since. But now the issue is I can’t house a 240mm AIO rad on top or in front cause it lacks the space for it. and the 5900xt needs better cooling. I currently use a 120MM AIO from NZXT (their newer one). And I’ve undervolted and slightly over clocked my 5700x. I’m running it at around 4.4ghz and its quite stable. My max temps go to around 70 degrees at FULL LOAD. BUT now with what i know about the 5900xt is that it runs quite hot. and a 120mm AIO aint enough.

To make things worse. I care about aesthetic too. It’s been my dream to have an end game build that can fly me to space too. So if I am to buy a 5900xt, I’d also need another case (and i’ve thought of the H6 FLOW) and i’d be pairing that up with the Kraken 240mm AIO. So all in all, it’s around a 50k-55k expense.

Before anyone takes shots at me, i’m sorry if this pisses anyone off. I’m jjust here to understand things that YT videos and google aren’t able to clarify for me. So yeah. Thank you to the guys helping.

Anywho. Am I thinking correctly? lol. Or have I got something wrong? Would the 5900xt also if undervolted, not give me temp problems with a 120mm AIO? That’s my worry. that if I get the CPU without upgrading my thermal solutions, I’ll face high temps with my current setup.

How about you get the 5900XT and sell off the current CPU to cover some of the cost?

Rest of the issues related to themeing and cooling can be addressed later. One step at a time.

My concern is, will i have thermal problems :’))

Like will an undervolted 5900xt be fine with a 120mm aio?

Probably fine, I’m running a 5900x on AK400.

A 120mm AIO has cooling cap of about ~150W which is the stock power usage of 5900x. It will work, but with no headroom you will be at the edge of your cooling capacity. I would still recommend a dual tower Air cooler, these are cheap and are more than enough for 5900x.

Okay, if thats the case. then undervolting would further help thermals right? with the 120mm AIO? I think i’m going for the 5900xt. Getting it for 22k (selling my 5700x and getting a big chunk of the price discounted). what do you think?

Get the CPU, rest of the things will fall in place automatically with some tinkering. Don’t fall for analysis paralysis.

Get the CPU you aren’t going to destroy the CPU or anything, you can later get a good air cooler if desired.

FYI - I’m running 9800X3D on an AK400, so AG620 is enough for 5900XT till 200W. If you OC beyond that, you need a 360mm AIO.

Avoid buying 120mm AIO.

The thing is I have an H510 case NZXT, with a 120MM AIO Already. My case doesn’t have space for a 240mm AIO or 360mm AIO on top. So massive issue. Idk if getting 5900xt makes sense for me.
