Which monitor would you choose?

Creating this poll mostly cause I’m sick, in bed, bored out of my gourd atm… plus I really want to know your opinion…

So, my setup until recently consisted of a 32 inch 4k 165Hz OLED, specifically the MSI 321UP (my first ever OLED) and a secondary 28 inch samsung ips monitor, also 4k but 60hz..

The OLED is mostly used for content consumption and the secondary is used to display discord, a couple of work files, static content.. but not so much that it would burn the OLED in as well since I minimize it when I’m not looking at it anyways..

Well, last month my 2nd monitor got yeeted to monitor heaven and I was looking to replace it when I came across a pretty sweet deal on an Alienware 3425dwm (god I hate monitor names) .. it was 40% off so I pulled the trigger and now my 2nd monitor is my first ever Ultrawide… And I really like it.. I’m finding myself enjoying the 21:9 aspect ratio very much…

My dilemma is pretty straightforward, I have two really beautiful screens but I can’t decide which one I want to use as my primary now, in front of my face and which monitor do i constantly turn my head to the side for? The OLED of course has unparalleled visual quality, way ahead of the VA panel of the Ultrawide.. but the 21:9 aspect ratio is amazing and the colors on that monitor aren’t half bad either…

What would you do? I’m just interested in hearing y’all’s opinions

I also got the same MSI MAG 321UP a few months ago and now got a Samsung 32 inch Odyssey G8 (also 4k OLED).

I dont do gaming or watch or produce videos - mainly coding/browsing - dont really care about burnin at the moment lol - so lower refresh rate monitors is what I prefer which is why I went for the MSI at first.

The MSI has annoyances though - the screen is glossy but this is a non issue because of where I’ve placed it - no lights behind me to reflect on the screen - the other main annoyance is the firmware silly logic that nags you with a on-screen popup (that you can cancel) at regular 4 hour intervals while you’re in the middle of using the monitor about running the pixel-refresh maintenance - and once 24 hours are completed and you are in the middle of, say a video conference meeting (or if you are in a gaming session) you cannot dismiss the popup - it will mandatorily start the process which lasts about 5 minutes - hope they fix this in future firmware update - but don’t have much hopes.

So I got the more-expensive samsung mainly for its matte screen - don’t really need the 240hz - I’ll mostly use the provided DP 1.4 cable which can only do up to 120hz without the DSC option enabled - this is going to be placed (yet to unbox it) in my other room where there’s multiple bright light sources.

The old LG IPS LED 27 inch 4k monitor which I got a few years go is still going strong though, just wanted to move to OLED and keep this as a backup or maybe sell it if it sits idle for long enough.

Forgot to mention that the main reason I’m hooked on OLEDs is since I got an Asus Zenbook 13 (glossy) OLED laptop a few years ago, and more recently a ThinkPad T14 with a matte OLED screen - these “dark mode” GUIs (on various OSes like Win11, Gnome, KDE, elementary linux Pantheon desktop etc) finally look awesome to me - wasn’t too impressed on my current LG IPS LED which, while pretty good with very little backlight bleed, still can’t match an OLED of course. Not to mention recently getting OLED TVs too, which look impeccable, needless to say.

Off topic but looking for your experiences with 32 inch monitor.

@ash_mohak @vishalrao

At what distance do you usually sit from a 32-inch monitor, and how many hours a day do you typically use it?

Quite close, around 2 feet or less… for few hours every day, not like a full-time day job schedule.

I believe these OLEDs have the “PWM flicker” issue causing eye strain? Hasn’t affected me so far.

What is PWM flicker issue? Is it a concern for buyers of OLEDs?

Some people are sensitive, i have read people have issues with VA too.

I saw a little bit of flickering maybe once after I bought one. Never again and no issue.

32 is great at arms distance, no issue. I use it for long hours, but i do dim everything and use dark mode and reduce blue/green gain. Otherwise, In dark modes in a dark room, white images can glare a lot because of infinite contrast.

32 4k oled is awesome as a monitor. 42 was too much, that will need more distance from eyes for me.

@Futureized I sit at a distance of 35~45 inches depending on my position on the chair… this being my first 32 inch monitor and my first OLED, the experience has been sublime… I’m at my PC for north of 5 hours at least each day… sometimes stretching to 9 hours

@vishalrao The annoyance that you mention, i’ve just set the reminder to go off every 24 hours of usage so I nearly never see it because the panel automatically runs the refresh when the screen is not getting a signal.. occasionally it has caused me to have a few minutes delay when it started running because the signal went off due to me not actively using the PC and being AFK but mostly it has been a non-issue because it runs when i turn the PC off for the day automatically.

All this being said, no one has actually weighed in on what I asked XD

Yeah I guess I should learn to keep the mains plug powered on so the monitor runs the refresh when it’s unused/sleeping, like an OLED TV. I have a habit of completely powering off the mains too.
