Better get a 6800GT for $300 or even a 6800LE from Chaintech for $240.The Chaintech 6800LE 256mb have a very high unlock rate to 16/6 and then overclock to 400/800!
Check out sharkyextreme’s price guide out 2day.
It is not a slower card(technically yes… ). It is neck and neck with the X800XL. And beats it in most benchies…
And also, it is very easy to oc a GT to Ultra levels. But it is difficult to oc an XL to X850 XT PE levels. So, you are literally getting the top end model from nvidia… at 350$ which is still around 15K. And I do not even need to say but that price is amazing for a 6800GT(in India…)
Nikhil,don’t upset FanATics yaar.
The 6800Gt should be preferred for two reasons:
1.Better feature set that really matters in games like SC:CT.
2.If push comes to shove an year down the line,u can use it in an SLI setup.
----- You See??? This can go on and on and on… every website gets slightly different results… and this battle between X800 XL and 6800GT is so close that even those minute difference make sure that the winners and losers change places frequently…
So, what this means is that while performance in DOOM 3 suffers quite a bit(seems to have been corrected to a certain extent with Cats 5.6), they both are very evenly matched…
So, zhopudey cannot really go wrong with either…
But zhopudey ---- I suggest you go for a Sapphire or Gigabyte, Asus, MSI, or some good brand. Not Powercolor…
In the end, I think, it is just a matter of availability and price and brand loyalty for zhopudey’s friend in the US
EDIT: Thanks for waiting till I completed my post…

***And also — the other advantages of a 6800GT are there ----- better overclockability, SLI support, and easy availability…
In 3DMark, the performance of the Radeon X800 XL is remarkably similar to that of the GeForce 6800 GT, both in terms of the overall score and performance in the individual game tests.

This is so true not only of artificial benchies but all the real world tests also… I guess, we have to call this battle a tie… maybe a win for ATI because of the pricing… but also note that for that sort of low pricing, you will not get any nice bundle with the graphics card…

The Radeon X800 XL is a new product, but it’s based on familiar technology. As such, it’s a price cut and a performance boost all in one. The Radeon X800 XL is faster than the X800 Pro that it essentially replaces, yet at $299, it lists for $100 less. What’s not to like?
As a reviewer, I’m sure I’m supposed to complain about something, but I’m kind of at a loss here. The Radeon X800 XL offers performance that rivals NVIDIA’s fastest single card, the GeForce 6800 Ultra, for $200 less. Not only that, but the XL has a quiet, single-slot cooler and doesn’t require an auxiliary power connection. This card should nestle neatly into a small form factor system without overheating the box or overtaxing the power supply. I suppose I’d like to see an AGP version of this card, but that’s not a complaint so much as it is asking for more.
With the Radeon X800 XL, ATI has redefined the upper-middle class of the graphics market, and NVIDIA will have to respond by slashing the price of the GeForce 6800 GT or making an equivalent move. In fact, now that the XL has arrived, I fail to see the point of spending more than $299 for single-card solutions that offer incremental performance gains over the XL. Unless you really, really need dual DVI outputs and video capture capabilities in the same card, there’s no reason to buy a Radeon X850 XT.
ATI says the Radeon X800 XL should be shipping in the next couple of weeks. Let’s hope they can keep the supply of these cards flowing freely. So long as the Radeon X800 XL doesn’t suffer from too many of the availability problems that previous X800 cards have, ATI has a winner on its hands.

about overclocking an X800 XL
From a stock of 400/490.
The GT runs at 350/1000. It can be easily overclocked to 400/1100 which is Ultra speed…

***I think that the lack of an external power connector(which people say is good) detracts from overclocking further…
LOl ! Guys zhopudey has already made a decision about the x800xl, he is just asking for the brand If you ask me i’d probably get the x800xl and save the 60-70$ for a rainy day since the new cards will also be out in some time
@zhopudey: the HIS would be excellent choice, also chk out the sapphire x800xl. Deejay has one and its a gr8 card.
HIS is one of the best manufacturers of ATI cards.
Comes premoded with ATI silencer.
Thats would be my obvious choice.
The reason for poor overclocking is not powerconnector along.
The card uses only 55watts. So PCI express bus has a lot more to provide.
The reason is the lowered voltages on x800xl 256MB ( 512MB model has higher voltages).
There is simple low risk pensil mod for that. Do that and it will overclock like creazy.
And for that you need a good cooler like the one his has.
Get HIS its a no brainer. And vmod it. ITs not the hardmod. Can be undone by simply using a alcohol swop.
You wont be disappointed.
Also if you want to ensure extra juice then get club3d x800xl and buy ATI silencer.
Club3d card comes with extra power connector.
Whenever a new card is launched the previous generation parts drop in price.
So even if the new card is above $500,the 6800 and X800 will see substantial drops. This has happened every time a new generation enters the market.
you can wait forever.
Prices will drop when we get new gen cards in good nos. Not before that. Thats not happening for couple of more months.
R520 is surely delayed. G70 will hit by next month but will come in good nos only in August.
And the pricing of ultra and X850s will drop by say $50. 6800,GT/X800XL will not drop significantly until the mainstream cards based on newer generations comes. Which is few moths after flagship models.
This has happened everytime.
THe cards which are near $300 at the moment will shed at max 10-20 $ and 6800U will come at $400.
I am getting my cards from us for last 4 years. I have studied this cycle for years
