Why does Steam FPS & AMD Adrenaline FPS are showing different FPS in Witcher 3?

Hello all,

Why does Steam FPS & AMD Adrenaline FPS are showing different FPS in Witcher 3?
In Steam its showing 144fps while in Adrenaline its showing 276fps for Witcher 3 in my 24" 1080p monitor. Which one is correct?

Are you using frame gen? I think steam don’t count fake frames

Yes I am using AMD AFMF.

Should I turn this off?

I want pure frames not fake frames. That’s why asking which one is real?

Steam and AMD fps counter should match once you turn off the frame gen.

All frames are fake frames. You can use frame gen if you like. Especially if you’re getting 144fps as a baseline. What is the refresh rate of your monitor tho? If it’s 144Hz then better to turn it off as you won’t get the benefit of frame gen.

Frame gen does genuinely help with motion fluidity so with a base fps of 100+ it might be worth it. But they don’t reduce latency (in fact framegen increases it) like gpu rendered (or if you’d like to call them “real”) frames do. Frame gen’s only application is to fill out the monitor’s refresh range. If you don’t have the upper range to accommodate the generated frames, turn it off.

The refresh rate of my monitor is 200Hz according to testufo.com

I am getting 144fps while I turn off framegen in adrenaline.
If turned on 288fps.

But in Steam it’s always 144fps.

What does it say in windows display settings? Make sure it’s set to the max possible refresh rate.

Tbf testufo.com is also able to detect correctly but only what your refresh rate is currently set to. You can have a monitor capable of doing 240 or even 360Hz set to any of 60/100/120/144/165/180/200 Hz rates in windows settings (not every monitor supports every rate, say a particular 240Hz monitor may only have 60/144/180/240 available while another 240Hz model may have 60/120/200/240).

In any case you can choose to use or not to use frame gen on a 200Hz monitor. It’s upto you. Unlike “real” frames - there is no clear cut answer on generated frames. It’s upto the user. Just use it if you like the “feel” of the game or don’t use it if you dislike the “feel”.

Not a bug. Intended design. Steam will not report generated frames in the fps counter. Again with framegen - you gotta go with your eyes and gut.
