Did msft release an emergency patch yet, for such a serious bug ?

Yeah, i was wondering the same. Considering the severity of the bug, where is the fix. I have the update uninstalled and windows update paused for a while.

This is just a random test/zero value data at this point going by comments online. Either every ssd is at some risk or it is just some overblown issue limited mostly to certain set of users in Japan.

Colleague’s HP elite laptop got into reboot repair cycle on Windows 11 yesterday, after multiple attempts bios prompted SSD couldn’t be found error.
I also have HP Zbook workstation laptop, but removed both updates earlier.
Didn’t interfere with his troubles as I find no fun in dealing with all this now, asked him to take it to repair shop, his laptop is sitting peacefully in the shop for last two days.

Microsoft: No, Windows 11 update did not break your SSD

Earlier this month, Microsoft released the August 2025 security update for Windows 10 and 11. Shortly after, a rather concerning report emerged about Windows updates breaking SSDs and corrupting data. Shortly after that, Microsoft acknowledged the reports and promised to investigate. Now, the company says you should point your fingers elsewhere, and Windows 11 has nothing to do with the problem.

Microsoft posted a new update on the Admin Portal, stating the following:

After thorough investigation, Microsoft has found no connection between the August 2025 Windows security update and the types of hard drive failures reported on social media. As always, we continue to monitor feedback after the release of every Windows update, and will investigate any future reports.

Interestingly, Microsoft is not the only one claiming that the reported issues have nothing to do with the update. Phison, a popular maker of SSD controllers, recently said that its comprehensive checks found no problems with the August 2025 security updates and various SSDs:

Phison dedicated over 4,500 cumulative testing hours to the drives reported as potentially impacted and conducted more than 2,200 test cycles. We were unable to reproduce the reported issue, and no partners or customers have reported that the issue affected their drives at this time.

It is clear that the problem is far from being resolved, and we will hear more updates on it. Meanwhile, if you have already installed the August 2025 update, it is recommended to take it easy with your drive and avoid heavy files. If you have not installed the update yet, you can pause Windows Update and wait for Microsoft to release more information on the issue.

While the company is busy investigating the SSD problem, a bunch of other issues wait for their resolution. For example, Microsoft recently confirmed problems with NDI streaming performance after installing the August 2025 update

MSFT also have to inform what caused the problem ?

There is something more to it, for sure; they can deny all they want.

Why they are denying it, this isnt their first rodeo. Some windows updates were reported to wipe disk earlier and now this. Microsoft is one of those companies, where we must think it as guilty until it is proven to be innocent.

Even after uninstalling the update does not leave the drive.
So buying a new drive which isn’t affected by this bug is the only way out it seems.

At this point its just better to never update your windows caveman style

I installed this on 13th Aug. My SSDs aren’t in the list of affected devices. So far so good
WDSN580 Gen 4 2tb
Crucial P3 Gen 3 1tb

My Patriot Viper VP4300 Lite isn’t using phison controllers so not on the list.

It’s using MAP1602A Falcon Lite controller from MaxioTech.

From above youtube video:

Nothing happened in my office pc so far good.

This seems to be completely random & seem limited to large data write (50GB+) in one go or some game (like the youtube video above). Best solution seem to be completely avoid the update or uninstall it & freeze updates on win 11 24H2
