Looking to buy a 1-TB external HDD (or "NAS" kinda product) locally (Pune).

Questions:

1. Which brand has the least hassle if there's a failure/replacement needed, like door pickup/delivery replacement, no questions asked warranty, easy customer service contact process etc?

2. Can an external HDD (USB or e-SATA) be tested with software like HDTach/HDTune etc to check for defects?

I guess the shortlist might be Seagate vs. WD here? I've got a Transcend 160GB at the moment.

I'm not looking at best price/features/reliability record, just the best warranty process :D

I would say Seagate Freeagent 1TB is a good choice. Seagate customer support is good too. I am not sure but I think WD has on site warranty.

Yes External HDD can be tested with software. In fact Seagate Freeagent comes with bundled drive manager which checks the drive for issues.

yes WD has onsite warranty...call them up and they will pick up the hdd from ur door and deliver a replacement in a weeks time at ur place...thts wht i hav heard...am lucky tht i dint need to call them up yet...

Thanks... Ya, I've read posts about WD internal HDDs, I hope its the same for external HDDs (not a different "division" of the company by chance which refuses similar service)... How are Seagate and Transcend with their external HDD support/warranty?

^^Transcend?? :S Do they make HDDs as wel??? :S

Anyhow WD have the same AAKS drives within the 500GB WD MyBooks [confirmed by ReNaGaDe] so perhaps the same applies for the 1TB ones as well; :D

WD warranty FTW; :D

^True that, had to open mine up due to unforeseen events and was pleasantly surprised to see the AAKS, choosing the WD mybook over the seagate freeagent drives is a nobrainer really...

WD + points

Free of cost home pickup & drop in case of RMA (All metro's)

Better looks with smaller footprint

Cheaper

^ Had to open it to recover some very important data i couldn't afford to lose , It did not have any seals as such so if done neatly it is undetectable :P

please remember:

AFAIK, most external HDDs have 3 yr warranty as compared to internal ones with 5yrs warranty :)

Something to look for.

have tried seagate warranty service in pune n it was decent :)

why do the external HDDs have lesser warranty than the internal ones .. arent those the ones used in the external ones too.

^^ I guess that would be due to frequent change of place/transportation related risk that come with portable media. An internal hdd is surely not going to travel as many kilometers in it's lifetime as an external hdd is deigned to travel. Hence it's chances of getting damaged in transit is far lower than an external hdd and hence the more warranty time.

Mine WD mybook 500 GB usb edition contains WD5000AAVS , already opened the case and connected as SATA :P . As stated above , if you pack it back neatly they hardly notice ;)
