I want to buy 2.5" 500GB HDD for laptop? which brand to go for?

Suggest me for:

1. I have in built 320GB HDD in laptop. Repalce it with 500GB and use casing for 320 GB.

OR

2. Buy external USB powered 2.5" 500GB HDD for backup purposes.

Which option to go for?

Requirements:

1. Solid build.
2. Good transfer speed.
3. Peace of mind (Low failure rate).

Transcend StoreJET 25P - Welcome to Transcend Website - StoreJet 25P

Transcend StoreJET 25C - Welcome to Transcend Website - StoreJet 25C

Get one of these via KMD if you can.

Else just go for any Transcend 2.5" Portable. For exact prices , contact 'mediahome.in' , 'TheITWares' or any of the reputed dealers on the forum.

Good Luck.

PS - Transcend is a very good brand and won't give you issues in 99% of the cases. I recommend not touching any of the part's inside your laptop. Just get an External HDD irrespective of it being a 2.5" or the huge externally powered 1TB one by Seagate/Buffalo.

WD is fine in term's of portable HDD. Although no personal experience with it. Using the Transcend one for an year now. No issues till date. Not too sure about Seagate , although yes the failure rate might be just high as compared to Transcend and WD!

no prob with WD also.

since u want solid build ...get the transend one which is approved by some US military blah blah...available everywhere.

ANy reasons..? AFAIK, replacing a laptop HDD is even more simpler than replacing a desktop HDD.

I think most manufacturers allow upgrading RAMs and HDDs. I'm not sure about this... may be if someone can throw light on this, it would be helpful.

^I think he's confused you with some sort of an HP representative IINM looking at your ID.

Dell does give that option provided its done by authorised reseller or by an dell technician. Upgrading rams and hard drives does not void warranty provided no physical damage is done.

i would go for option 2 and get a seagate 500gb portable hdd , the most sleekest external hdd ive ever seen.

I think you should really consider buying Hitachi as internal drive. Its cool, silent, reliable and solid.

I wanted a 500GB HDD too, and I will be going for Hitachi.

Read customer reviews for WD, Here:

Customer Reviews Of Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

And, for hitachi:

Customer Reviews Of HITACHI Travelstar 5K500.B HTS545050B9A300 (0A57915) 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - Retail

If you want lower disk failure rate, I would recommend a hitachi HDD with separate enclosure for your needs.
