I have a BR Writer, so want to understand before I discuss further. Pardon the noob talk. S0 these BR disks can be used as storage just like a DVD? Whats the advantage over an external HDD?

Yup. Can be used like DVD.
And for the second question, it really depends on the user, if an external HDD is good for him/her or DVD or any other disk.
Just out of curiosity, why did you even buy a Blu-ray burner in first place if you had any doubts about it?

Got a good deal on a LG Blueray Writer when buying my gaming rig from Prime ABGB, MUmbai so couldnt resist thinking it will be future-proof. But never got around to actually burning a Bluray yet :)

yeah. Everbody thinks about being future proof.
So, what did you think about buying it?
Price can be negotiated a little
