Some suggestions to try out:

- Dell XCD 35 (complete VFM at ~7.5k with AMEXLB coupon from letsbuy.com)

- Micromax A70 (I own this, so a bit biased towards this - perhaps the best money can buy at ~6.4k)

- Samsung Galaxy Y - fast processor, but smaller display

- or the P500 as nitmeh3 suggested

P500 or Dell XCD 35 ...

I have the P500 for over 8 months, and its good.

get the Dell XCD 35 if you need the higher resolution, but the 600 MHz processor has to work hard to push the high res display.

The P500 has decent resolution/processor speed/RAM and battery life

Dell XCD 35 for the screen size, brightness & resolution, though I was not really impressed with the battery life. After installing CM7 things changed.. really snappy performance and increased battery life. Would recommend it over P500 just for the screen though. Negative could be Dell service wrt mobiles though cannot really comment since have had no first hand experience.

The LG P500 has a official 2.3 upgrade.. but you can always install CM7 (2.3) for Del XCD 35

They both have a 600 MHz processor, but the LG P500 has a screen resolution of 320X480 so processor works less for drawing the screen..

The Dell XCD 35 is amazing for the high res screen.

Basically get the P500 but you need better battery life and good build quality (with the exception of dust under screen problem, although LG service center's will acknowledge the problem and replace the screen).

Dell XCD 35 if you planning to do lot of browsing and pdf's ...
