@ ALPHA17 :

Thank you for your reply. Yes, it definitely helps when someone is suggesting something & helping to decide.
Processor - Accepted.

Graphics card - Accepted.
But any particular reason for XFX or Sapphire. And how about MSI? I'm looking for good after sales support (just in case). And any model suggested in particular will also help.

Motherboard - Accepted.

Memory (RAM) - I went through the article. But won't the 1600MHz help if I overclock at a later stage or isn't it just stable with the new mobos. Also, on the Qualified list for the Memory there are sticks more than 1600MHz also mentioned. Or should I just settle down for the 1333MHz? Or is the price difference more so as to not opt the same? Opinions & suggestions required.

HDD - Should I go with WD? How does it fare against Seagate? I heard that WD has 5yrs warranty as against 3yrs of Seagate.

PC Case - Accepted.

PSU (SMPS) - Correct me if I'm wrong. I think if I've to go for a CrossFire setup at a later stage (which I didn't mention in my post - sorry) then I'll require anything above 600-650W.

Monitor - I want a 24" at minimum. Please, any suggestions. I want the model details.
So all-in-all, I'm still looking for suggestions regarding:
1] Graphics Card
2] Memory (RAM)
3] HDD
4]PSU (SMPS)
5] Monitor.

Please keep suggestions & opinions coming so that I get the best bang for my buck along with good & stable performance.

The reason for XFX or Sapphire is that both are much better at the job than MSI trust me I have an MSI card and the refrence design for cooling is extremely flaky and the temp shoots up a lot

If you still want the MSI search for their new MSI HD 5770 HAWK Edition mind u it is 1K more. :(

I recommended 1333MHz as initially if you don't over clock your RAM will not be fully utilized as said in the review, as well as if you are so keen on clocking ur PC higher I am sure you can do the same for the RAM. :S

As for your crossfire setup will recommend either a Cooler Master Silent Pro 600 W or 700 W this can ramp up your costs by as much as 7K

A Benq 24 inch is all I that I know off so they are priced round 10K so upto you :) :S

As for your HDD stick to Seagate I saw two of my friends WD Blue Edition drives go kablooey so thats why recommending Seagate

@ ALPHA17 :
Graphics Card - Point noted. Thanks for clarification. I've decided to go with Sapphire card.

Memory (RAM) - Accepted. Will check out availability & prices and then go for a suitable G Skill Ripjaws 2*2GB DDR3 1333MHz/1600MHz (4GB Kit).

HDD - Accepted. Will go with Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB 32MB Buffer dirve.

PSU (SMPS) - I'm a bit confused here. Please help me choose one

Monitor - Will go with Benq G2420HD.

So finally my selected config looks as follows -
CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition (Revision C3) - HDZ965FBGMBOX

Motherboard - Gigabyte - GA-790XTA-UD4

Memory (RAM) - [Any one depending on availability & price - In mentioned order]
G.Skill Ripjaws 2*2GB 240 Pin DDR3-1600 (PC3 12800) - F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO
G.Skill Ripjaws 2*2GB 240 Pin DDR3-1333 (PC3 10666) - F3-10666CL7D-4GBECO
G.Skill Ripjaws 2*2GB 240 Pin DDR3-1600 (PC3 12800) - F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH
G.Skill Ripjaws 2*2GB 240 Pin DDR3-1600 (PC3 12800) - F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM
G.Skill Ripjaws 2*2GB 240 Pin DDR3-1333 (PC3 10666) - F3-10666CL7D-4GBRH

Graphics Card - Sapphire Radeon HD5770 1GB GDDR5 PCIE

PC Case - NZXT Crafted Series - Temptest EVO

PSU (SMPS) - [Help me select one]
Antec TruePower New - TP-650
CoolerMaster Silent Pro M700 - RS-700-AMBA-D3
CoolerMaster GX-750W - RS-750-ACAA-E3
CoolerMaster GX-650W - RS-650-ACAA-E3
Corsair CMPSU-650TX
CoolerMaster Silent Pro M600 - RS-600-AMBA-D3

Monitor - Benq G2420HD

HDD - Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200.12 (32MB) - ST31000528AS
I've gone over my actual budget with the above specs. But looking at the above specs, please suggest me if any changes needs to be done.

Also, if I should go for a Radeon HD5850 instead of Radeon HD5770. Is it worth the extra money?

Suggest if I could cut some cost in any of the components or by going for an alternative.
And please let me know if "NZXT Crafted Series - Temptest EVO" is a good case for my specs and budget or is there an alternative.
Future possible upgrades -

Thermal Paste - Artic Silver - AS5 Thermal Compound 3.5 gram

Heat Sink & Fan - CoolerMaster Hyper 212 PLUS - RR-B10-212P-GP

Memory (RAM) - One more similar kit.

Graphics Card - One more similar card in CrossFire.

Keyboard & Mouse - Wireless Backlit Combo. (Please suggest)

ODD - Probably a SATA3 (6Gbps) Blu-Ray Burner.
Lastly, please let me know if I should buy the "Thermal Paste" & "Heat Sink & Fan" now or should upgrade later as I'm already running over my budget.
Friends & TE members please keep the suggestions coming as I'm close to finalizing my rig.

For yourself Sire the following

Antec TruPower TP 650
Please go for a 1333 MHz kit as 1600 MHz is wasted
Also if you buy the Hyper 212 Plus you will end up blocking one of your RAM slots in an AMD rig
If you plan to hop on the Crossfire bandwagon then go for HD 5770 or settle for a single HD 5850

As for the future buys I have no idea or recommendations to make :S
Best of Luck assembling the PC :)

and yes the TEMPEST looks like it can get the job done

Hi there... sorry for not responding soon as I was down with typhoid & jaundice.

Anyways, I'd gone to Lamington Road on saturday (17.04.2010) to check for the prices and components availability. I found the following:
CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition (Revision C3) - HDZ965FBGMBOX

Motherboard - [CPU & Motherboard combo prices]
Gigabyte - GA-790FXTA-UD5 ==> Rs 18,200/-
Gigabyte - GA-790XTA-UD4 ==> Rs 17,000/-

Memory (RAM) - [Any one depending on availability & price - In mentioned order]
No particular model but 2*2GB G.Skill kit for Rs 7,500/-

Graphics Card - [I found that XFX cards are more costly compared to Sapphire cards]
Sapphire Radeon HD5770 1GB GDDR5 PCIE ==> Rs 6,500/-
Sapphire Radeon HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE ==> Rs 14,200/-
XFX Radeon HD5770 1GB GDDR5 PCIE ==> Rs 8,500/-
XFX Radeon HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCIE ==> Rs 15,400/-

PC Case - NZXT Crafted Series - Temptest EVO ==> Rs 5,400/-

PSU (SMPS) - [Help me select one]
Antec TruePower New - TP-650 ==> Rs 7,650/-
CoolerMaster Silent Pro M700 - RS-700-AMBA-D3 ==> Rs 7,750/-
CoolerMaster GX-750W - RS-750-ACAA-E3 ==> Rs 6,750/-
CoolerMaster GX-650W - RS-650-ACAA-E3 ==> Rs 4,200/-
Corsair CMPSU-650TX ==> Rs 6,500/-
CoolerMaster Silent Pro M600 - RS-600-AMBA-D3 ==> N.A.

Monitor - Benq G2420HD ==> Rs 10,900/-

HDD - Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200.12 (32MB) - ST31000528AS ==> Rs 3,650/-

Thermal Paste - Artic Silver 5 ==> Rs 350/-
Apart from the above, as per ALPHA17's comment "... the Hyper 212 Plus you will end up blocking one of your RAM slots in an AMD rig". So would someone suggest me a good equivalent for the same so that I don't end up sacrificing any of my RAM slots. I don't wanna do that for sure.
@ ALPHA17

Also, you said "If you plan to hop on the Crossfire bandwagon then go for HD 5770 or settle for a single HD 5850". Is it because HD 5850 does not perform better in a Crossfire config?
Waiting for valuable inputs from dear TE members.

get a x6 1055T proc instead for 10.5k and get a 890GX board for about 9.9k which has usb3 and sata 6gbps

where did you get that price for saphhire 5770 1gb , thats quite a sweet price considering its the 1gb card.

id suggest u get the corsair tx650 psu as corsair has really sweet rma , no questions asked , table top replacement with a new psu.

@ SoulFire

Thanks for ur reply.

There is a shop at Lammy by the name of MacPlus. I got the rate of Sapphire 5770 1GB from there. On that day I had visited almost 8-9 shops there. I found this shop to quote least prices for most of the items.

Since my last post I found about the launch of Phenom II X6 1055T & 1090T BE. But as I went through a few reviews, i found that 1055T is not good for overclocking compared to Phenom II X4 965 BE. And 1090T BE is costly @ Rs. 15000/-. Also the 2 extra physical cores are not of much use until multitasking is heavily used. Infact as the core speed of 1055T is less @ 2.8GHz, in certain apps 965 BE @ 3.4GHz is better.
Please let me know if VMware utilizes multi-core effectively and will the 2 extra cores help me in this regard as my prime focus is to use multiple VMware virtual machines. This will help me select the correct processor for my rig.
Also, I've heard 890FX boards are launched and I'm thinking of buying that if it is within my budget. I'm considering Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5 if that is available.
About the PSU: Point noted. But I was considering one of the following now: (Sorry for changing my mind too often)

1] Antec TruePower TP-650
2] Corsair CMPSU-650HX
3] Seasonic SS-650HT Active PFC

Any more suggestions?
Apart from all this, I have a small question:

How/Where do connect all the fans of my Cabinet (6 of them in NZXT Tempest EVO)? Will there be enough connectors for the same?

I know this is a stupid question, but this is for the first time I'll be buying such a Case.
Lastly, I request TE members to please suggest me a decent Illuminated (Backlit) Keyboard & Mouse. Wireless will be better.
Waiting for valuable feedback.

yes go for corsair smps; and you don't need corsair 650w if you are going for a single 5850; even their 450w can run that gpu..but to be on the safe side and since you are planning to overclock get atleast 550w which will cost around Rs.4500 only.

5770 crossfire is more or less equal to a single 5850; in some reviews the single 5850 is even better

plus crossfiring means more power..means more expensive smps..so just get 5850 with corsair vx550 smps..

also regarding the HDD, if you have already decided then its ok, but mind you Samsung> WD > Seagate anyday! However availabily of samsung is very poor in india..so you are better off with WD black version 1tb..but that's totally your choice :)

@ The Moderators

Please help me change the 'Thread Head' from '50K All Purpose Rig!' to '70K All Purpose Rig Specially For Running Multiple VMs!' as I've increased my budget from 50K to 70K for the new rig that I wish to buy and also change the config accordingly. This will help me in getting some new feedback and valuable suggestions for the same.

Thanks in advance.
@ SoulFire, ravin, RadioHeAd

Point accepted about going with Corsair.

I'm planning to go for 5850 for now. But I'm planning to go for a CrossFire setup in the future (maybe a year & half down the line) and I'll be OCing with air cooling. I think atleast a 650W will be required. I just hope it'll suffice. Any suggestions?
@ ravin

Regarding the HDD, earlier I was looking for WD Balck & Seagate with inclination towards WD.

But I found out in some review of their comparisation and found that WD was good for small file transfers & faster boot times but Seagate was good for larger file transfers & watching movies where a large file is continuously read.

Later I came to know about Samsung Spinpoint F3 drives. So in the new config that I'll be posting in the next reply I was considering between Seagate & Samsung. Still not aware about their comparisation in terms of performance, but read some really good reviews about Samsumg.
Thank you all for replying and do keep the suggestions coming in.

Please note my revised budget is 70K!
Based on the discussion & suggestions till now I've selected the following with some selections pending -
Processor (CPU) -
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition (Revision C3) (Model: HDZ965FBGMBOX)
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition (Other option. But costly. So will it be worth?)

Please let me know if VMware utilizes multi-core effectively and will the 2 extra cores help me in this regard as my prime focus is to use multiple VMware virtual machines. This will help me select the correct processor for my rig.
Motherboard -
Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5
Asus Crosshair IV Formula/Extreme (Only if available & in budget. Any suggestions among the two or any other for that matter)
Video Card (GPU) - XFX Radeon 5850 1GB GDDR5 (HDMI, 2*Dual Link DVI-I, Display Port)
Memory (RAM) -
1] G.Skill Ripjaws 2*2GB (i.e. 4GB) DDR3 1600MHz (PC3 12800) 240 Pin, CAS Latency 7, 1.35V (Model: F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO)
2] G.Skill Ripjaws 2*2GB (i.e. 4GB) DDR3 1333MHz (PC3 10666) 240 Pin, CAS Latency 7, 1.35V (Model: F3-10666CL7D-4GBECO)
3] Corsair Dominator GT 2*2GB (i.e. 4GB) DDR3 1600MHz (PC3 12800) 240 Pin, CAS Latency 6, 1.65V (Model: CMG4GX3M2A1600C6)
(Please suggest if I should go for a 2*4GB DDR3 and ditch the GPU for now)
Monitor - Benq G2420HD
SMPS (PSU) -
1] Corsair CMPSU-650HX
2] Seasonic X-650 (Model: SS-650KM Active PFC) [Note: 80 PLUS Gold Certified] (Don't know if available & the cost)
3] Antec Signature 650
(Will go with Corsair as it has a good RMA policy. But is the Gold series of Seasonic worth?)
PC Case (Cabinet) - NZXT Crafted Series - Tempest EVO
HDD -
1] Samsung 1TB (32MB Buffer) Spinpoint F3 - HD103SJ
2] Seagate 1TB (32MB Buffer) Barracuda 7200.12 - ST31000528AS
(Help me select one of the two)
Thermal Paste - Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound 3.5 Grams
Heat Sink & Fan -
1] CoolerMaster Hyper N620 - RR-B20-N620-GP
2] Scythe Mugen-2 (Revision B) SCMG-2100 (Don't know if available & the cost)
(Any other suggestions are welcome. CoolerMaster Hyper 212 PLUS which I'd selected earlier will come in way of RAM slots. So looking for something else. Please note that I don't want to obstruct any slots)
Keyboard & Mouse - (Please suggest a good illuminated keyboard & mouse. If it is wireless then its icing on the cake. Note that I don't want to go overboard with this)
Accessories -
A] Belkin 8 Out Surge Protector Economy
B] Creative Fatal1ty USB Gaming Headset HS-1000
Apart from all this, I have a small question:

How/Where do connect all the fans of my Cabinet (6 of them in NZXT Tempest EVO)? Will there be enough connectors for the same?

I know this is a stupid question, but this is for the first time I'll be buying such a Case.
I think I'm close to the final build now and any suggestions to finish it fast are appreciated.

^^ at a budget of 70K, IMHO you will be better served by an Intel-based rig. Get i7 930+any mid-range X58 mobo you can find and you are good to go.

Also, try to see if you can fit a U2410 as monitor.

@ hatter

Thanks for ur reply.

I'm looking for a 16:9 screen with at least 2 ms response time whereas Dell U2410 has 16:10 screen with 6 ms response time. Though looking at the specs I did like the monitor, it does not fit into my requirement.

As for the i7 930, I'm not sure how good it is with OCing. Also if it is good I'm looking for a USB 3 & SATA 3 board so that it is a bit future proof. So could you suggest one.
With this done, how much of a price & performance difference will be there compared to the AMD config of mine. I'm asking for the same as I've not seen prices for the Intel side of the hardware.
If anyone could please give more inputs to give regarding the AMD - Intel selection it would be good to know & discuss before I go ahead.

Thanks again to all!

If you still want the MSI search for their new MSI HD 5770 HAWK Edition mind u it is 1K more. :(

It could be that specific card only, I used MSI and GPU is quite cool and silent, additionally IIRC XFX after sales is handled by the infamous Rashi, not sure how did you recommend that.

i7 930, on any day, overclock better than Thuban. It has better IPC performance and lower power use. Price around Rs 14,500, and as far as performance is concerned, except for heavily multi-threaded applications like Cinebench, it is quite a lot better than T1090

As for motherboard, contact a few dealers here and try and get Gigabyte GA-X58a-UD3R Price should be around 10-11K
