Graphic Cards 5770 crossfire enquiry

Beginner
I am using saphhire 5770, core 2 quad @ 283 Gz, 4gb ram 800 mhz, corsair tx650, on gigabyte ep45c ds3r..

Recently 5770 prices hv gone down so planning to xfire it.

Q1)So what do u think should i go ahead with 5770 CROSSFIRE or buy a new card like 6770 etc?

Q2)How good is 5770 crossfire? I heard its comparable with 5850. Are there any driver issues on win7 x64?

Q3)Can i crossfire different brands of 5770? eg saphhire 5770 with MSI 5770?

1. What display do you use? And what games do you intend to play on this system?

2. Good provided your system/apps can utilise the additional card.

A pair of 5770 would definitely be faster than a single HD 5850 but crossfire comes with its share of minor niggles and issues - poor scaling compared to SLI, texture bugs in some games, compatibility issues (some games may actually work better with a single GPU than crossfire because they weren't optimised for dual GPU systems and you may have to wait for a proper hotfix/driver update) etc.

3. Yes. However, it is best to crossfire the same models from the same manufacturer to avoid issues with different BIOS and related compatibility issues.

Sell the card for ~4.5k and get a Sapphire HD6870 1GB GDDR5 ~ 11.4k!(7k for intended HD5770 purchase+ sale proceeds)

HD5770 XFire permance is between the HD5850 and HD5870. The HD6870 also has similar
performance!

Advantages of choosing the HD 6870 are much lesser power consumption compared to XFire setup, almost same cost, dont have to worry about bugs! Its a no contest IMO.

HD5xxx XFire scaling is not great when compared to HD6xxx scaling(Which is on par with SLI scaling if not better)

I would rather buy a single 6870 I guess than a 5770 CF. And anything over a 6870 will severely bottleneck your CPU as well.

IMO you should go for a Core i5 SB + 6950 2GB if possible :)

No use Xfiring old tech. Sell it off as DA mentioned and migrate to new technology. As it is 6xxx series are seeing better driver support from ATI. As they have a habit to make legacy actually legacy, quick..!

Stick to your HD5770 for a few more months, I guess waiting out this generation(already more than half way through) and wait for the 28nm tech.

Dude..fyi the HD 6770 is just a rebranded HD 5770 and the card which is its direct successor is HD6870.

err..I think you meant to say the CPU will bottleneck the card.

my budget is a lil tight now and i was thinking of buying a second hand card and use it till end of this year...and then sell both of them off

Except that June has already come, and there are rumors that the next gen may be as early as July or August this time. Had the next gen been scheduled for November or December, nobody in his right mind would ask you to delay your upgrade. But waiting 2 months for twice the performance does sound good to me.

@Op

Its not worth CF two old gen cards. Wait a bit for new gen cards to release and save up some money. Later, sell off your old gen card and get a mid-highish range card (say GTX 670 may be as an example, next gen release) and it will perform far better than your CF set up with two mediocre range 5770s. Single gpu is always a better solution than dual gpus.
