Graphic Cards 6800GS : what fps should i be getting?

my config is as follows.

2800+ AMD64 754 socket proccy running at stock speeds
Asus K8N - VM mobo
512 MB DDR 400mhz
PNY Verto 6800GS factory overclocked to 470/1100

what fps do people with similar configs get in games like HL2 and Q4. I was under the impression that the card would be enough to let me play both the games at all detail level settings at 1024 with 4xaa and af. however in both those games when i go through doors or enter large areas.. fps drops to a low 20-30. this fluctuation from 20-150+ is very annoying so i was wondering what fps should i expect for my pc specs at that detail level. are these fps drops normal for this card or is it underperforming? im guessing it could be bottlenecked by something else as i've seen people with 6600GTs play hl2 with stable fps at slightly lower detail level settings (not really noticeable in game).

when i ran cs:source at 1280 all high with 8xaa and 16x af the fps was still above 100 even through smoke. the only exception was the water area in aztec where it dropped to about 60ish. i was the only guy on the server though. the cs source stress test at those settings gave me 110 fps. i wonder why hl2 is being problematic. anyone with similar configurations care to post their experiences?

Strange to see the fps so low... I used to have a similar config albeit 2GB ram until recently and an X800XT. I used to run HL2 fine at 1280 with 6xAA, 16xAF and it gave around 80-100fps most of the time unless there was lots of water. In Q4 it used to run 1280, 4xAA, 8xAF no sweat... always maintained 45-50fps. You might wanna put another 512MB of RAM.

7200rpm. i did a 3dmark 05 test like you suggested yesterday and i got 5489. is that good?

i also forgot to mention that in hl2 those frame drops are happening in the same areas regardless of detail settings.. texture detail, model detail, aa/af on or off etc seems to make little to no difference.

Your Card is fine..
HL2 is very CPU Taxing.
2800+ 754, which is 2Ghz is just not enough to give you stable FPS.
You need an Intel @ 4+ Ghz or an AMD @ 2.5+ Ghz to get stable high FPS in HL2/CS Source.

goldenfrag he is talking about hl2 & not css.

hl2 will work fine on a s754 2800. i had finished the game playing on the same config as yours except i had 1gb ram & 6600gt. worked fine for me on 1024 res with 2x fsaa.

& your 3dmark score seems proper. just get the ram, it will fix a lot of the problems.

^^ He said CS Source also.

Also, HL2 and CSS Are the same engines if you 4got.

So its one and the same. The Source engine is very CPU Taxing.

Id advise you to Overclock ;).

goldenfrag.. cs source seems to be fine even if i spam smoke nades.. its over 100 almost always except in aztec below the bridge where it drops to 60ish.. of course i haven't tested it with players. just in case it matters.. i'm not running legit hl2 :P its the very first version with all that node building out of date and ai disabled crap. the thing is i just checked again with a friend who has similar specs.. and only a 6600GT. he seems to be able to play the game fine at really high detail levels without any sudden fps drops.

It's the ram. My framerate used to drop as well in the open areas in Quake 4 until I got 1gb.
Also cpu to an extent, but VM means no overclocking. Get more memory, it will really smooth things up.
