i know there are probably a lot of people thinking their cards are overheating, but mine, i'm pretty sure is.... as i type this with nothing open but firefox and the nvidia control panel my gpu core is at 89C with ambient temp at 64C.... now if i leave the control panel open (so it tracks my temp) and run counterstrike source it will get above 120C (i don't know how far, but i get a message saying things with the card got disabled to prevent damage, and the slowdown threshold is at 120C)... i've had the card for years and have never had a problem (or just never knew there was a problem as i just started checking the temp when i installed the forceware 9424 drivers)... the card is not overclocked and i do have a fan in the back of the case underneath the psu.. i already opened it up and dusted it to make sure that wasn't the issue..... and i do have a pci slot open underneath it that i could put another fan in if necessary....

system:
PNY 6800gt 256mb
amd 3300+ 64
2g pc3200 ram
antec truepower 430w
2 seagate 160G
sb audigy 2

funeral, I wouldn't recommend running your 6800GT at temps above 90C. As SS suggested, clean and replace the thermal compound (preferably with Arctic Silver 5). That will drop your load temps to under 80C.

If you don't have AS5 at hand, just open the card and blow out dust accumulated over and around the chips and re-insert the card. Btw, I was also getting high temp readouts while playing Far Cry. The system would crash after around 5-10 mins quite frequently. After a little cleanup, the card works fine.

As a precaution, I would also advise to get a small AS5 tube and apply one grain of paste with a credit card over the gfx chips after removing the existing residual paste. I've purchased one recently and plan to do the same.

well i just booted up and it's at 63-65C with ambient at about 47-48C.... how's that sound.... i haven't taken the time yet to boot a game and see what happens, so i'll let you know..... btw its really hot in the room right now cause it's about dusk and i just got home and turned on the ac...... = )
