In a limited budget what should I go for, Sigma or Tamron. Or should I wait, save and get the legendary NIKON VR II.

The only thing I hate another the tanning is the push pull system for AF MF switch. Does that switch often lot while shooting ?

^^ That depends on you whether you use MF or not in the field. I have a Sigma 70-210mm f2.8 and AFAIK I can't remember the last time I used MF.

Err, no I meant I hardly use MF with a 70-200mm class lens.

The Sigma is the least sharp among all the 70-200mm class lenses out there (its still sharp but not as good as the Tamron, Canon and Nikon lenses out there).

However its got an ultra sonic motor which is silent and fast and comparable to the old Canon 70-200mm mk1 and Nikon 70-200mm VR I.

The Tamron is as sharp as the old Nikon lens and the old Canon lens but is softer wide open compared to the Nikon and Canon MK II versions.

However the Tamron has a noticeably slower AF than any of the above mentioned lenses.

I'd get the Tamron if you aren't a pro and the images aren't critical. If they are, then go for the Nikon hands down.

Actually the Tamron is as sharp as the Canon and Nikon mark1's (f2.8) versions. Canon's mark2 is arguably the sharpest in its class, but cost an arm plus more. Tamron's are available for 40k odd in India (cheaper abroad) which makes them a good VFM... Nikon VRII and Canon Mark2 cost in the 1.2-1.3 lakhs INR range..
