Graphic Cards 7900GS vs 8600GT - What to buy?

I need some help guys. I am buying a c2d based pc and I have almost decided the entire config. I still can't decide which gfx card to go for. I will be gaming, watching movies, and also will doing graphics programming (directx, shaders, etc). I cant afford a 8600GTS, so thats out of the question.

between 7900GS and 8600GT, which one do you think I should go for? The card should atleast last 1.5yrs or so before requiring an update. Hopefully some better and cheaper cards are out by then. I dont plan to OC, atleast not for now, might try later.

PRIME quoted me these prices

XFX 7900GS - 11.5k
Galaxy 7900GS - 8.8k

XFX 8600GT - 7.5k (no HDCP)
XFX 8600GT Fatal1ty - 9.7k
Galaxy 8600GT - 7.3k (with HDCP)

Which one should I get? 8600GT is cheaper, has dx10 support, and the galaxy model also has HDCP support. 7900GS on other hand is a bit better in games. The XFX 7900GS goes slightly over my budget and XFX 8600GT doesnt support HDCP. Fatality is not worth it right ?

Are Galaxy cards good ? How is the after sales support? Some of the review I read said good things about galaxy.

So tell me guys..which card to buy and which company.
 
Answer these will ya

1. How long do you intend to keep this card?

2. Do you watch HD 720p and 1080p videos? If yes are they more of a priorty then gaming.
 
1. As long as it runs stuff acceptably. Might try to sell and buy a new one if a good cheap cards comes out and if I have the cash. Would like to keep this one for atleast 1.5yrs or so though.

2. No, I dont watch HD videos currently, but that might change now. Priority is gaming and gfx programming.
 
In that case I'd suggest the about 30-35% faster then 7900GS as its faster then 8600GT

Also since you dont watch much of HD, then just let the CPU handle the decoding, hope u have a dual core proccy...

If you can get a 8600GTS for 9k something, go for it, its a good card..and Galaxy 8600GTS costs some 10k, wait for the price to drop further if you can...

Remember that 7900GS wont be a hotseller after 1 yr though...cause next gen DX10 cards will be out and no 1 will want a DX9 card...
 
I cant wait more. Galaxy 8600GTS costs 10k? how much mb is that ? I can only spend 10k at MAX for a gfx card. If its more than 10k, I will have to stick to 7900GS or 8600GT. Which of the cards that I listed above would you suggest? Also, can we expect better drivers that increase the performance of the 8600GT in the future?
 
Well drivers wont impove the performance of 8600GT that much as the h/w is just not present...

And yeah I am pretty sure Galaxy 8600GTS costs 10k rite now and prices should be close to 9k in a month or so if you can wait...

Else I would personally suggest go for a 7900GS rather then d 8600GT
 
is that 8600GTS 256 or 320 ? the xfx 7900GS is 11.5k, cant afford that, so will have to go for Galaxy 7900GS. Is that a good card? How is Galaxy's after sales support?
 
The 8600gt and 7900GS price i posted are the prices PRIME quoted to me on phone. I dont know about the GTS though. Also no idea about the leadtek extreme. Galaxy 8600GT and 7900GS have nice reviews, so I think its one of them for me. Stormblast why are you choosing 8600GT over 7900GS ? I am asking coz It might help be decide :P
 
^ i am taking 8600gt as its cheaper than 7900gs. i will hardly use it for games but will be nice to have a dx10 card to try some new game once in a while.
