Which would be better if cost, technology and performance are taken into consideration ....

7900 GT Extreme (About 23k)

7600 GT x 2 (SLI) (About 28k)

A single card is better than two cards any day of the week. Unless you are going for X1900XT crossfire or 7900GTX SLI, it makes no sense to get two low end gpus.

Totally agree that 7600 SLI could not match 7900GT if VFM is considered.

How about 7900 GT (256 MB Extreme) SLI vs single 7900 GTX (512 MB). I guess both are from the same family and differ only in (GPU/memory) clock speeds. The performance should be considerably better than a Single GTX considering price diff of about 10k beteen these two...

How does crossfire compare with SLI. Anyway in India availability of ATi cards is itself a problem (Difficult to get and too costly compared to nVidia cards).

Also I think SLI is quite matured (as compared to crossfire) as it was first introduced by 3DFX for Vodoo cards a long time back which was later modified and improved by nVidia. I remember having read about the technology at that time describing how two 3DFX cards having 8 MB RAM each (that much ram on a graphics card was a jaw dropper in those days) could be paired together for processing alternate scanlines.

Just wanted to know one more thing with out creating another thead althrough a bit OT.

I have observed that the Leadtek 7900GT has a considerably smaller HSF (Probably because its based on 90nm fabrication and produces less heat) than my XFX 6800GT. My 6800GT idles at 64 - 66 deg currently (since its summer). How does the 7900GT compare to that with its smaller HSF and all. If any one here has this card, can they post the idle and load temps they have to the stock cooler.

The 7600 GT and the 7900 GT share the same cooler right? Oh and I saw an Evga KO edition 7900 GT with a custom copper cooler. Reduced temps and noise quite a bit just like the His IceQ3 did for the X1900XT.

Edit : WOOT 1001 st post :D Now i cant remember what the 1000 st post was  Oh well too sleepy now, goin to sleep

The smaller heatsink if to discourage overclockers from doing insane ocs on the 7900gt. However with 7900gtx you get 512mb of ram as well which i am sure would prove to useful in some of the games right now(read Fear, TRL) and the future.

^^ Aye, the 7900GT's stock coolers are supposed to be damn noisy.

One would be much better off with an nV Silencer or any other aftermarket cooler.

If both 7900GT and GTX are based on the same technology and almost similar specifications, then why does the 7900GTX have such a huge HSF when the GT can do with he same HSF used in 7600GT. Guess if its on same technology, then 7900 GTX should also be running cooler. My best guess is that may be nVidia clocks this GPU a bit higher than normal to get better performance. What say guys?

^^Its the clocks... 450MHz vs 650MHz. The heat output increases a lot. Infact the 7900GTX HSF is actually an overkill for it.

Would that mean that the stock cooler is more than enough for keeping a GTX cool...

Don't you think that in quite a few benchies a 7600GT SLi will compete a 7900GT ext even if it doesn't beat it.
But if we take into consideration the psu etc, then 7600GT Sli should compete a 1900XT/7900GTX.

1. 7600Gt sli is slightly faster is almost all benchmarks as compared to a single 7900Gt as per the anadtech review (google it ).
2. The noise + psu requirements + heat of the sli setup isnt worth sli'ing a mid range card
3. 7600GT sli cant hold a candle to 7900gtx/19000xt. Period.

Okay now let me ask a different but connected question. Do you think its a good idea to go for a sli mobo with a single high end card say 7900gt or 1900xt today and then buy a similar card few yrs. down the line ( when their prices fall) ??? Does that arrangement come out cheaper than buying another card saY 3-4 yrs down the line? I mean is it really worth to spend that much extra amount on a sli mobo and a higher watt PSU and extra cooling/silencer req. for a sli setup ????
