hi

i recently got 7900gt and along with i got a y shape power cable(which on the one end has connector which will go into the graphic card and on the other end two connectors for power supply) but i have only one vaccant power supply connector available from my power supply and i have connected it to one of the two connectors from the card.
what i want to know is connecting both the connectors necesaary or just one will do the job. The card is working now with one connector but i would like to be sure about it.

thanks

hey man..
y shape connector is to take power from SMPS to your card and again to any other device.
you dont need to connect both. just one is enough.
but my advice is dont connect any other device which is free from Y cable.
i connected my 120MM cabinet fan to it and faced some problem when there is so much load on system.
if you have good PSU then no problem.
btw what PSU you have?
i have Zeb 500W :( running x1800xt-512MB.

thnks 4 reply
i have cooler masters 380 watt smps
and i dont have any plans of connecting any more things to my pc soon.so no problem with that i think so.

you need a Y-Type Power connector (other than the PCI-Ex power supply connector).
here is the PIC - http://www.davidandkarma.com.au/persistent/catalogue_images/products/v2k4edwn.jpg

romove the power connector of CD/DVD-Drive. Connect 'my' Y-Connector at one end. Connect one output to CD/DVD-Drive. Other end is empty.

This empty point and another that you already have. connect them together with the PCI-Express Y-type power connector.
DONE
In Kolkata, its 50/-

I do not understand what do you mean by -
Please, explain...

i mean connecting one of the two connectors that are available on the other end of the PCI-E y cable to the power supply and leaving the another connector empty.

:S
ARE YOU MAD !!
any DOG bit you
do you called any DOG, 'tommy'
(the AD)
It will kill you Graphics card.

You need both to be connected, else it will be same as your mother/wife starts giving you only launch and stops the dinner.
READ This -
This cable is used to provide extra 12 volt power to PCI-Express expansion cards. PCI-Express motherboard slots can provide a maximum of 75 watts. Many video cards draw significantly more power so the 6 pin PCI-Express power cable was created. These high-power cards draw most of their power from the 12 volt rail so this cable provides only 12 volts. These are often called "PCI-Express cables" or "PCI-Express power cables". If your power supply doesn't have a PCI-Express cable then you can use the adapter shown above on the right to convert two 4 pin peripheral cable into one. If you use one of those then be sure to plug the 4 pin peripheral connectors into separate cables coming from the power supply. If you plug them both into the same power supply cable then you are drawing all the power of the PCI-Express connector through a single 18 guage wire. You can usually get away with that but there's no reason to do it. The PCI-Express 6 pin connector is polarized so it can only be plugged in pointing in the correct direction.

@agent_47

I am sorry, but don't do that.
you must connect both.

@TheMask

In my whole life I never insulted anyone, not even to my enemy.
Not even with you (TheMask) even if we are worse than enemy.

In bengali there is a saying 'Bitten by Dog' when someone goes mad. I just used the translated version.
and including the ad saying 'every dog is not tommy'.

I am extreamly sorry if you miss judget it.

BIG SORRY

you insult your worse enemy (Me) very horribly :@

You are welcome. Feel free to ask any Qs.

again, 'bitten by dog' is just a bengali sayings, not a slang-language at all.
a MOD, mistakenly, gave me another 'infection'..... so what. I am a 'bad boy'.
In a school, there should be some bad boys. Specially me, loves bad-boy movie... hahaha.

You undetstand... thats all I want.

guys.. let me understand things .....
i have x1800xt 512MB card. as good as 7900GT and powerwise it need almost 30% extra than 7900GT at load.
i have Y shape cable and both side Female pins and center 6 Pins. the center one goes to card. i dont know much about this. so i have connected one female end to PSU cable and other is empty.

as per my knowledge Y shape is there to extend power supply in case if you want. otherwise card manufact. can give direct point to point connection. i dont think you need to provide 2 cables to it. unless the card has 2 power connectors.. i think there are some cards need 2 power connectors.

when you connect 1 cable and run 3d06 and if you dont see any problem then i think it is fine.

i have one more Y cable where i am running 2 Fans on it.

i searched google and many other graphic card forums and found that
1)if ur y cable has one male pin and other female pin than u can use anyone to attacht the psu

2)if ur y cable has both male pins then u have to connect both of these to the psu

3)no one heard of y cable with 2 female pins

r u sure u have two female pins check it again
