Hi ,

I have a core i3 540 processor , MSI p55A-gd65 Motherboard and a CorsairVX550 power supply (SMPS / PSU).

My query is that my motherboard has an 8pin power socket for CPU power but - of the 8 pin 4 pins are covered by a plastic bracket , my power supply supports both 8 pin and 4 pin for the cpu power and currently I am using the 4pin connector for powering the cpu . CAN I use all the 8pins on the cpu power connector by removing the 4 pin plastic bracket and not damage my motherboard?

Am confused ! as even my Mobo ( Gigabyte MA785g- US2SH, AMD platform ) has 8 pin, i tried both the alternatives, & it WORKED ! ! ! 4 pin & 8 pin.

what's the purpose of 8 pin in the 1st place, while the processor pwrs up even on the 4 pin, is it for overclocking options/optional ?

- My PSU Corsair VX 450 features only 4 pin x2 & i've connected 2 of the 4 pins to the Mobo socket !

Through 4 pins the processor get enough power but sometimes when you overclock, its better to power proccy through all 8 pins. It is more like for better stability.

^Provides additional power to multi-core processors and added stability esp. when the CPU is overclocked. Referred to as an EPS connector, it has an additional +12V rail.
