Graphic Cards 8600GTS Vs 8600GT? Which 8600GTS (256/512/BRAND) ?

Hi All,

I need some help.

Thing is, i plan to upgrade my CPU/MOBO/RAM this year end. Since i am always on a budget, will prob go for an AM2 based system (something around a 4000+ to a 4600+). :)

Now i have a friend coming over from the US in Nov. Now earlier, i was planning to get a 8600GT locally for like ~6k. However, i can get a 8600GTS for the same price (6k approx) from the US (newegg)

Now the questions:

1. Worth getting the 8600GTS over the 8600GT, right?

(Leave aside the 9X series is coming stuff. If i waited for the next new part i would never get anything ;) If it comes out by the time i plan to buy, fine.....else this is whats coming :D

2. I was looking at the various cards on Newegg, EVGA and XFX seem the best bet cos of their lifetime warranties (Tho MSI and Foxconn are even cheaper i think but not by much)??? Ppl please confirm.

3. 256 or 512 Mb????? The 512 one carries another 50$ premium. But i dont think the 128bit bus will be able to use that much extra memory anyway :)

4. NOTE: no HDCP as of now. Dont watch any HD content. Currently will be using my old 15" @ 1024 for games :ashamed: Will upgrade monitor to LCD in mid '08.

5. Will this card be sufficient for driving a 19"/22" in games at medium settings at least? at NO AA etc. else will NOT get a 22" later :p cos theres no way i can upgrade my GPU budget. m hard up on saving for this stuff as it is

Looking for replies

EDIT: 6. Will be running on a 400W powersafe. Sufficent????? 2-3 Hdds + rest standard stuff.

EDIT: 7. + the EVGA overclocked version is 10$ more (720Mhz Vs 675Mhz) Worth the 10$????

Hmm, lets see...

Since you are sourcing the card from US get ur hands on the 8600GTS as its the same price point as 8600GT in India. See if a OC'd GTS fits in your budget.

Coming onto the HDCP part, well GTS cards have HDCP for sure so can't do anything about it.

For the brand stick with EVGA.

As for amount of VRAM, I'd sugeest that you buy whatever fits in your budget but with a OC'd card given more pref then the 512MB version.

Oh and will upload the Lava pics soon...hehe

Just realised that the 512 Mb version might be a bit better (~15-20% per some reviews on net) but its also 2k more...That 2k can be used in my budget in other ways. Such as another Gb of 667 DDRII :D

+1 for EVGA. If any issues, next option will be XFX.

Also, ll probably get the OCed version since its only 10$ more.(EVGA)

Question remains: Howz its performance @ LCD resolutions??? (14XX and 16XX ones in games??(without AA will do ;) )

+ me on XP for a while. will switch to Vista much later ;)

+ how does this compare to a 7900GS???? cos that is almost the same price with 256Md and 256bit cards...i know its DX9 but me on Xp only...... :) is the futureproofing worth it performance wise????

7900GS nearly equal to 8600GTS @stock with winsome, lose some.

get the OC'd version or the stock one and then OC it like how super saiyan is doing with his 8600GT.

About performance, 14x should be ok with no AA and all for the current gen games (remove the current current absoultely f* latest from the list)

hmmm...so then the 8600GTS is a good buy for my budget (~6k) :D Will try to get the EVGA...just hope those newegg rebates keep up till Oct n the price goes down even more :eek:hyeah:

Also, no issue of any CPU bottlenecks, right? me planning an X2 ~4400+ or therebouts with 2Gb RAM :D

my 8600gt was getting bottled even @ 2.8ghz C2D.... . now running @ 3.2Ghz & performance seems to be ~25% more . . din bother going more .. lol

what??? :O

u gotta be kidding me..how much horsepower does a GPU need

Anyone else got similar issues?

Damn..then AMD better make another price drop in dec :eek:hyeah: else i ll go with the bottleneckin :ashamed:

^^ This certainly is news, afai had read up, a C2D at 2.4 was enough for a 8800GTS let alone a 8600GT...

Hmmm @techie, if thats the case then no current AMD can provide you with 0 bottlenecks.

if u guys really want . . then i can go & benchmark some games & post here @ different cpu clocks..

bah but i'm too sleepy now..will prolly do it tomo...

ok..did some fps benchmark

Game : Counter Strike Source.

map : De_dust2 (pre recorded movements)

Gpu : 8600GT @ 675/1512

Used Fraps to benchmark.

Hi,

Need to order the card in 2 days. Final confusion:

8600GTS 256Mb OCed to 720Mhz for 160$

Vs

8600GTS 512 Mb stock (675Mz i think) for 195$

?????? is the stock 8600GTS 512Mb worth the extra 35$ or should i just get the 256Mb OCed version? :(

HELP........
