Graphic Cards 8800GT Custom Coolers (dialup warning)

Adept
I couldn't play the waiting game any longer and gave in 2 the tempations of the latest release :ashamed:

Had got a credit note of 16.7K INR, for my 2 months old PX8800GTS 320 which fortunately, Leadtek couldn't replace as they were out of stock :hap2:

So I got me the cheapest available, the Galaxy 8800GT for 14.5K (all inclusive) which actually is a basic Nvidia 8800GT reference card (with 3 yrs warranty:p) without even a Galaxy sticker anywere on the hardware nor does it mention anything abt any vendor in the software. All I got through Riva tuner 2.06 in the Vendor ID is 10de (NVIDIA)

Did get the CD but couldn't use anything from it as there was nothing for V!$T@ X64

I had totally decided 2 flash EVGA 8800GT SSC edition's Filmware (even after Bikey, stating his disapproval & FunkyMonkey stating it as unnecessary) and I definatly will (just 4 kiks)...but 1s, I ve a decent cooler :eek:hyeah:

That'll take time so I manually took the Core to 701; shader to 1729 & memory to 2002 (bit more than SSC), leaving the fanspeed at 75% through Riva Tuner 2.06 & started gaming

4 hrs COD 4 and the temps never crossed 71*C...they were Ideling @ 51*C; although I got quite a few "Device Drivers Failed & ve recovered" errors with 169.09 forceware winvista 64bit beta. So I went back to 169.02 forceware winvista 64bit whql and continued COD 4 for another 2 hrs...without any errors this time and the temps were now below 69*C  may be cause its was past sunset & winters r finally here in Mumbai :hap5:

Now I'll be continuing Crysis, which I played for abt an hr yesterday...till my NFS PS downloads finish ;)

I haven't got the chance 2 record FPS & take Screen Shots yet nor did I manage any benches or tests (2 busy playing) but I promise them soon.

But 1 thing is 4 sure...the noise that the fan makes at 75% or even 65% is really irritating & a custom cooler is a must if U r gonna OC it.

So lets ve a look at the different available/soon 2 be available coolers.

WOW ALL THESE COOLERS..

i just ordered mine yeaterday.. will be here in bout 3 days time.. so are these coolers available in india?? lammy i mean.. and where and for how much if yes??

thanx.

OK after doing lot of research, talking to experts ( a guy whose name cannot be disclosed at this moment in public on his request, all i can say is they he knows the 8800GT design parameters more than most and is working with XFX ;) ).

The reason you are getting those driver errors is because of memory m8.

Sure go ahead and clock the core to SSC level. But bring that memory clock down.

It has nothing to do with the cooling. Cool it with anything you want, but you will kill your card if you do not back down on the memory.

Reason : the reference design interface cannot hold the memory at 2Ghz for long. Memory is 1ns which means its rated at 1000Mhz DDR ( 2000 effective). But the interface is not meant for this.

This is the reason you are not seeing the memory clock of 2Ghz on reference model even with the fast enough memory on the card. Even most oced editions are not taking memory to 2000Mhz. Only SSC edition is the one which has memory running at this speed. And I am not sure how long those cards will last.

Reduce your memory to say 975 or even 990 and all those errors will disappear even with 169.09 drivers.

Hmmm...could be the memory but I didn't get a single error in the 169.02 driver. No harm in keeping the memory at 975...n I'll try gaming a few hrs with the 169.09 driver @ that memory.

But that's not the reason of getting the cooler...nor starting this thread. Its actually...like U said :

Its easy to say set the fan above 75%. At that speed its freakin whiny jet engine.

I have a very silent system here and I dont like ( though I dont have much choise as of now to cool the card as ZV9 is still not in my hands ) the noise this card's fan makes at high speed.

For now I have set it to 65%.

:p

funky your friend got it all wrong, the error most probably is nvlddmkm stopped responding and has recovered????? If this is the error hass got then dont worry its a vista bug which for some reason didnt get resolved from the initial days. Even i used to get it with my 7900GTX which was not overclocked alongwith people having different kind of Nvidia cards(ATI ppl are not spared as well, the error message is something different), another thing i am running my xfx 8800gt @ 100% fan speed and either my hearing is impaired or the fan is not that irritating as others are mentioning. My temps have not crossed 65C as of now with 725/1700/1000.

Not to sound rude or sarcastic Funky read the above lines again, doesnt it sound like coming from a Help Desk guy who has limited technical knowledge??????? Man what does interface is not meant for this means??? Are you saying that the drivers would have problem if we overclock the memory???
The XFX guy doesnt have idea about overclocking hence the crap.

Not from the helpdesk, this is known problem with 8800GTs. They are dead hitting wall on memory front. Look anywhere. its the design problems.

Unless you do hardmods there is no way of getting memory over 1000 no matter what chips are on the card ( though initial revisions all carry same memory, zotoc has come out with the one using samsung 1ns ).

There is a reason for even oced versions not going past 1950 on this card. This has been confirmed even by JonnyGuru. I have never bothered studing the design of the graphic card ever in my life, but I will take his word regarding this.

As far as driver error is concerned, it stats happening here dead on when memory is taken above 2000.

It refuses to complete benchmarkes at memory speed of 1020 and core still stuck on stock.

I have rested individual ocing limits. I received the Galaxy card and hour back for testing which I popped in to see if this is same with that card too, and guess what. Same thing. 1000=dead end for that card as well.

I agree with you Funky that certain memory chips have limitations due to the chips themselves and sometimes because of the volts passed onto them, but that doesnt mean that you will get device driver stopped error(as mentioned before its a vista bug).

What you are mentioning is that the system hangs if we take it above a certain limit, even I have noticed that, mine goes till 2050, though not extensively tested for being stable at that.

I totally agree with the "nvlddmkm stopped responding and has recovered" being a vista bug. Hell, that was the main problem with my Leadtek 8800GTS.

Check Nvidia forums. Its full of it !!!

But drivers should take care of it. Non of em did for my leadtek but its only happning with 169.09 beta...even with memory @ 950 or even 850 !!!

And no problem what so ever with 169.02 whql...even with memory @ 1002.

Now, I really need a 6 pipe cooler and most of the available are 4 pipes or lower.

Does any body knows of 1, apart 4m HR-03 GT ???

^^actually because of this error, I am thinking of going back to windows XP, have already reinstalled vista once coz of this. Cannot imagine how this error continues drivers after drivers. Though vista has some updates for this error but that doesnt resolve it either.

I am yet to face that error on my system if memory is kept at 1000 or below.

It was never there with 8800GTS or even 6200TC. And I have completely switched over to vista x64 retail from july-august. ( Only critical updates are installed manually and DirectX is kept up to date to latest release. )

It is well known problem though.

You are one lucky man Funky, coz this problem has been giving me sleepless nights, imagine getting this error in a MP game, which happens with me. Though it has not yet surfaced with this card as of now, but this error is there for each and every NV card(and ATI too, with a different name)

hass i have started getting the nvlddmkm error man on my system, can you confirm whether your 169.02 drivers are working fine, I am on 169.04.

^^ What OS ???

I had 2 install the 169.09 for Vista x64 again as Crysis refused 2 start in 169.02

And I do get the errors 1s in 2hrs when I play Crysis in DX 9 mode. Don't get em in DX 10 mode but there's some wired gfx issue which happens when I choose any rifle with the telescopic view...all the trees & N koreas disappear. Can only see the outline...Mountains are clear though.

Lemme post a screen shot....in an hr !!!

has, if you are using ahem version of crysis then the issues u face are mostly due to that. It does not work properly in vista x64.

I ve the *ahem* x64 fix which is working fine with DX 9 !!!

Heard Razor was doing something 2 get the DX 10 2 work aswell....but why only when I ve the scope attached

No problem with the same scene when I remove the scope.
