Hello guys,
I am still enjoying my new found love, the XFX 8800GTX Extreme Edition but whats disturbing me is the temperature of the same.
My ideal temperatures are:

CPU: 37°C Source: Intel TAT

GPU: 72°C Source: nVidia nTune

Looking at the above, its clear that its not a cabin circulation issue because my CPU is running quite cool as per standards. These temperatures are AC temperatures in May-June summers.

I searched the net for ideal temperatures guides for 8800GTX and I found that the ideal temperatures for the same is 60-68°C, which include many makes/companies and many OC'ed versions. Even 8800 Ultra's ideal temperature is 68-70°C.

The good thing is that the load temperatures have not yet crossed the normal threshold which is 78-79°C. But I havent checked this with some more powerful games like F.E.A.R. or FarCry or even 3DMark06 for that matter.

Can anybody suggest what the problem can be? Dont tell me this is normal, because I have searched the net very well to hear that. ;)

Thanks txf, but I forgot to point this that I knew about this already. I wanted to turn the fan speed to 90% but nTune's fan control settings (Manual/Automatic) selection is grayed out and the default is Auto.

use rivatuner ... ntune's fans settings don't work with some drivers (158 and 160 beta series)

Expect 85C load temps with the stock cooler... if you want lower temps, invest in some aftermarket cooling or a cheaper solution is apply some AS5.

thx guys... my 8800GTS idle around 65-66 now let me try to make it on 55.
on load like 3d 05 it never crossed 72 so i feel no problem..
i already have one 120 MM fan right on top of my card but it is taking Air inside.
should i fix it opposite but then from where my will cpu cooler breathe...

who said that, I'm using it right now on Vista ... version 2.1 :P

YUP - RivaTuner ver 2.1 worked for me too in Vista.

See what I did just today..... attached a 120mm fan to the Thermalright HR-05 PLUS cooler....Should get around 45 - 47C for my 8800GTS on idle during these cooler monsoon days :ohyeah:

@txf... Will try RT 2.1 then. 2.0 does not work with Vista. I had two powerful fans installed in my system already, one of which directly blows air to the 8800GTX. I think the exhaust is above the card, so putting a low rpm fan on the side just over 8800gtx might help.

@rio... I dont want to spoil my warranty with some aftermarket cooling because I will hardly overclock it. Load temperatures are ok, whats bothering me is the idle temperatures!!

Some info...
Obviously any video card with 681 million transistors is going to run hotter that one with a lower transistor count—there’s simply no way around that. However, a video card’s operating temperatures depends as much on the case it’s installed in and the ambient room temperature, as its inherent design. With a room temperature of 68° and the e-GeForce 8800 GTX installed in the system configuration used in this review, the card idles at 58 -60° C. During long gaming sessions, the card will run at 72 -75° C. However, if I turn the heat up in my apartment to say 75° (it gets pretty cold out here on the East Coast this time of year), then the card’s under-load temperature jumps to 80 - 83° C. That’s not as high as a ATI Radeon X1900 card with the stock cooler, but it’s not as cool as the previous generation GeForce 7-series cards, either.

Woah!!! I will need to but a new motherboard to fix that monster of a card, or remove my all other 8x, 1x PCIe cards!!

BTW, your card might get a seat on "Biggest loser jeetega"!!! :ohyeah::P

I have an EVGA 8800GTS card and I read in the EVGA forums that EVGA do honour warranties for their cards to which the Thermalright cooler has been attached as long as all the original parts are returned with the card. The ram heatsinks in my picture have been permanently attached with Artic Silver Adhesive :)

If you want a cheap solution for cooling your card see the first post in the thread in the link and check the way the person has attached the slot cooler. These are available locally - though not very good ones. The better slot coolers are the dual slot ones from Antec - these are not available in India. The heat from the 8800xxx cards comes out from the back of the card and also from the 5/6 narrow slots on the side of the cards case - these slots actually throw HOT air inside the computers case !! :O

Here is another option for cooling the 8800xxx cards - involves opening the card but no permanent change. This involves attaching an 92mm fan. I think this should make a BIG difference to cards temp.

Where do we get these at lammy and what do we ask for ??

Called a SLOT COOLER or DISPLAY CARD COOLER .... it is there in EBAY India and I saw this at Prime - it is in the showcase right behind the guy sitting at the counter - made by Titan for 350/- ... but theitdepot have the cheapest version of the Antec one for 850/-. The Antec should be MUCH better than the one by Titan.
The mod from the madshrimps site....

Ok. Installed RT 2.1. Worked perfectly. Fan speed is a fixed 90% now.

Idle temperature: 67°C. Much better.

Just executed 3DMark06 and then F.E.A.R. for half hour. The AC is not on and room ambient temperature must be around 32°C. The temperatures I recorded were:

CPU: 51°C Max

GPU: 77°C Max

Relief!!!

The EVGA 8800's have a lifetime warranty, or at least the 320mb superclocked one does. Mine seems to sit at around 58c on idle and rarely gets above 65c. I am also using Riva Tuna, there is a guide out there that I read, that regulates/automates the fan speed based on temps. I think I found the link somewhere in this forum :)
