Dont look for the Z5500 then.. :P

I say get an MX5021. Should suffice ur needs if 5.1 speakers is not a must. U already have an extra decent sound card as well!!! :)

how abt a few Ks more ??

The only thing that fits is the Onkyo HTS-3105.

Edifier has some nice 5.1s but I'm not sure if they're available in India.

Any custom setup will not fit in that budget.

The Z-5500 is pretty much the only option at that price point. There are better options a bit below - I like some of the top-end Altec Lansings. Availability will be an issue.

hmm...thanks for the input...will consider tht...

i went to ezone...they dont have the 3105 model...only 3100 :(

also went to sumaria and they dint have either of the models...they told me they will get back to me...

i was goin thru onkyo's site and came across this model HT-S5100...

has any1 heard these or know how good are they compared to the 3105 one and how much wud it cost?...it has an active subwoofer (although i dont know wht tht means)...although 7.1 channels are beyond my needs as 7.1 audio is rare...still if the price diff (if not too much) justifies the quality am willing to spend..

@sangram...wht wud b the minimum cost if i go in for custom setup of a decent speaker set?

finally which is the best place (cheapest) in mumbai to buy the onkyo speakers?? i need to buy within a week...

Last I spoke to Sharman he was not planning on stocking the 3100/3105 due to poor sound and build quality. I only found them at the ezone in Milan subway, and didn't like them.

I know I'm pushing your budget beyond its limits, but I suggest you check out the JBL/Pioneer combo I got, it's not so hot for music but for gaming it's a blast, and movies are quite decent. The receiver offers tons of customisation options and tone settings (a few of them are actually usable). Active subwoofer that sounds passable, and if you set the crossover to 150Hz as recommended, the system integrates decently.

For music I use it in direct mode, the SQ is acceptable. After the sale of my Alien DAC to Sunnyboi I'm using this setup all the time, even for music. It's not as satisfying as the Alien+custom amp+Dynaudio speakers, but those speakers themselves cost 3x of the cost of this whole setup, so I'm not expecting much. As it is the system holds up quite well, even with the modest 25 watt rating on the amplifier.

On to the question about custom - check out Chaudhary trading for cheap custom setups. He'll start you up at about 15K for amp+speakers (without sub, IIRC). I've heard a few of those and though they sound a bit better than the boomboxes that disguise themselves as PC speakers, they don't sound very great.

You can then listen to Space and Telome. Roughly similar in price, size, and SQ, they don't do very well for music but for movies you'd be hard-pressed to find better at their price - about 20K for a full setup, IIRC.

I got a quote for Sonodyne Genie and AVR300, that was about 40K. And the one that I auditioned and really liked, the JBL SCS 260.5 and an associated receiver, was about 45K.

Norge also has some options at lower price brackets.

Really, how important is surround to you? I'd advise you plan well. Pick a receiver and front speakers from a high-quality line, preferably one that is one or two years old. Add bits when you have incremental cash. First the sub, then the rear and center speakers. There are some well-thought out receiver recommendations on this forum, and I really like the PSB Alpha and Image lines of speakers. A system built on those foundations will keep you going for a long time, for music, movies and gaming. I had costed out the set, the speakers totalled about 45K, receiver and sub extra, but I figured I'd only need it once in a while so I went slow on the purchase.

Having chosen the JBLs, I couldn't be happier. The bulk of my gaming happens at night, where the system can't play loud. It manages just fine, with no loss of impact or drama. And the speakers are really, really tiny, but have a proper driver complement and manage to integrate respectably with the sub, though the crossover is much higher than I like.

Balashome has a setup like that. I am using the Alpha minis in my office for music, and they work well but they really need a slightly larger room (my office cubicle is about 8x10 and has gypsum sheets for walls) to function well. In my bedroom when they were being tested, they really shone. But if the room gets too large, they struggle to fill it, like in my living room.

For a medium size room, they work very well. This is regardless of the fact that my speakers have polymer/plastic drivers, unlike the newer ones which use a metal dome tweeter and a proper poly cone midwoofer.

I've heard the Image B15, 25 and 45, and for the money there's nothing better you can get. A little thick in the lower mids, but the speakers don;t call any attention to themselves, which is a good thing. The Alphas use the next lower gen of drivers, but Paul wouldn't put out a bad speaker. I speak from owning the cheapest speaker in that line.

sangram, how would the PSB Alpha speakers be as fronts for an HT system?

Techhead, Sangram has said it all. The PSB Alphas punch above their weight - comfortably. Since getting my Alphas I have been hounding the hifi shops in the city to see if I can get better fronts and I can assure you that there are virtually none in the Alpha's price range that can match it. Noticeable improvement comes when you are ready to spend almost twice that of this speaker.

In the past, Chaos has talked to me about Usher S520, but unfortunately I have not had a chance to hear them here in Chennai. They are said to be a fantastic speaker in their own right. But I wonder if a big chunk of their price goes down to their extra chic look and finish. For me, looks are not important, functionality is.

But with the PSB Alphas, I would say that it has to be matched carefully with the amplifiers. When I paired them with an Onkyo TXSR505, they sounded absolutely pathetic. Pretty pointless, really. They sound lovely with the slightly warmer amps like NAD and Marantz. All in all, it is one of the best, if not the best entry level speaker for the new hifi enthusiast.
