Last I spoke to Sharman he was not planning on stocking the 3100/3105 due to poor sound and build quality. I only found them at the ezone in Milan subway, and didn't like them.
I know I'm pushing your budget beyond its limits, but I suggest you check out the JBL/Pioneer combo I got, it's not so hot for music but for gaming it's a blast, and movies are quite decent. The receiver offers tons of customisation options and tone settings (a few of them are actually usable). Active subwoofer that sounds passable, and if you set the crossover to 150Hz as recommended, the system integrates decently.
For music I use it in direct mode, the SQ is acceptable. After the sale of my Alien DAC to Sunnyboi I'm using this setup all the time, even for music. It's not as satisfying as the Alien+custom amp+Dynaudio speakers, but those speakers themselves cost 3x of the cost of this whole setup, so I'm not expecting much. As it is the system holds up quite well, even with the modest 25 watt rating on the amplifier.
On to the question about custom - check out Chaudhary trading for cheap custom setups. He'll start you up at about 15K for amp+speakers (without sub, IIRC). I've heard a few of those and though they sound a bit better than the boomboxes that disguise themselves as PC speakers, they don't sound very great.
You can then listen to Space and Telome. Roughly similar in price, size, and SQ, they don't do very well for music but for movies you'd be hard-pressed to find better at their price - about 20K for a full setup, IIRC.
I got a quote for Sonodyne Genie and AVR300, that was about 40K. And the one that I auditioned and really liked, the JBL SCS 260.5 and an associated receiver, was about 45K.
Norge also has some options at lower price brackets.
Really, how important is surround to you? I'd advise you plan well. Pick a receiver and front speakers from a high-quality line, preferably one that is one or two years old. Add bits when you have incremental cash. First the sub, then the rear and center speakers. There are some well-thought out receiver recommendations on this forum, and I really like the PSB Alpha and Image lines of speakers. A system built on those foundations will keep you going for a long time, for music, movies and gaming. I had costed out the set, the speakers totalled about 45K, receiver and sub extra, but I figured I'd only need it once in a while so I went slow on the purchase.
Having chosen the JBLs, I couldn't be happier. The bulk of my gaming happens at night, where the system can't play loud. It manages just fine, with no loss of impact or drama. And the speakers are really, really tiny, but have a proper driver complement and manage to integrate respectably with the sub, though the crossover is much higher than I like.
